5 lug to 6 lug questions......
I have a 71 c10 with disc/drum with 5 lug. I would like to switch to 6 lug. it has a 12 bolt rear, so what years will work to swap the axles?? I was also wondering is the disc brake spindles the same for 5 and 6 lug?? Could I just swap the rotors and be done??
Thanks for the help, Travis |

I may be wrong, but I believe 6 lug is stricly drum and 5 is disc.

Originally, I believe that there were no 6 lug rotors, BUT companies do make 6 lug rotors, and they should go right on and work with what you have now. I can't remember company names offhand, but I think ECE is one of them. As far as the axles, I believe the 71-72? years are a hair longer? than the 67-70? axles, but as long as you stick with coil to coil or leaf to leaf rearend swap, not sure what you have, but it should bolt right up.
Just curious, but why the swap, you already have disks? You can get almost any set of rims in 5 or 6 lug configurations.......

Try GMC Paul on the 6 lug rotors, they should drop right onto your spindles. at the rear, I think you will find the 70 axles to be the same lenght as the 71-72 pcs...... you can also opt for aftermarket. I have Moser axles in the 12 bolt under my longhorn($260 shipped with studs). IMO, thats not a bad price for NEW pcs, it will cost you at least 1/2 of that to redrill your stockers . best of luck, 69L

I saw a post in the suspension forum about a guy using 68? 3/4 ton lower control arms with 88-98 spindles, 88-98 u & l balljoints with stock 68 1/2 ton upper control arms and 88+ light 3/4 ton 6 lug rotors/calipers..........
Was a pretty low buck deal... Here's the link: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ght=disc+brake

Watchout trying to change out axles. The 69 is shorter than the 71-72. The 70 can be the same as the 69 or the 71-72, it was a transition year.
Good luck, Rg

Thanks for the help guys. I just like the look of 6 lugs over 5 lugs, and if was simple like just swaping rotors and axles then i will do it. I might as well get it the way I want it before I spend a bunch of money on wheels. A 67 rear will bolt up under my 71, right?? It's a coil spring rear.
Thanks, Travis

All of these other guys are talking about actual axle swaps...I was talking about rear-end swaps, which I think you should be able to find a whole rear-end cheaper than buying new axles, but I guess you already have one. As long as you are swapping coil to coil, because the mounting pads are different for leaf and coils....I don't think you want to get into welding.....you will be just fine. The rearends are a little wider from 71-72 but I think it's only like an inch...probably never even notice the difference...but I believe the mounting pads are in the exact same location. If you have the two rearends side by side, just measure between the pads to be sure

Redneck is right. If you change the whole rearend from one coil truck to the other everything will bolt right in. I would bet you would find many people who would be willing to swap you for the 5 bolt rearend.
I wish I had known about a year ago, I ended up scrapping a 6 lug rearend, no one would take it... Rg
