got a 6.2l diesel question...

Hey guys,

Got a couple questions. I've come across a low mile 6.2l (85k miles). Im thinking about putting it in a 86 1500 pu.

While the motor is out, I was looking for some suggestions.... I dont want to do any big mods, such as a turbo, cause Id like to get the truck on the road asap. But Im considering a crattle, since the 6.2 is known for lower end problems, and ofcourse a new harmonic balancer..... Maybe later I can add a turbo without pulling the motor again.... any more ideas??

Also, this truck had a 6cyl in it... So the springs have to go, If I grab diesel springs, Will everything bolt up? do I need to do anything else?? For brakes, I believe im going to go with a vacuum cansister.

This 1500 wont be used for much other than daily driving. I wont be loading it up much, I have another truck for that. Im hoping that I can get some good mileage with it though.

You should change the head gaskets and head studs, check the block for cracks around the main bearings, add some main bearing girdles, some new glow plugs, and maybe some tming gears.

why timing gears? I noticed casey did that to his... Whats up with that?? Is there something wrong with the chain??

Don't waste your time doing this convert. The 6.2 was never better than 15 MPG and unless you have ALL of the stuff that is needed for a diesel system, you would be better off with a 4.3 gas engine.

Wow I think someone is just slightly retarded. I have a turbo 6.2 in my jimmy and I get 20mpg on the freeway with 33" tires at 70mph. With my 6.2 n/a in my c10 swb i get a good 16 around town. The 6.2 is a very reliable motor in my opinion, I can ride my blazer at 16lbs of boost, riding the govenor, and 950 egt all day long and it doesnt care. The 6.2 would be a much better choice.

well, lets not start calling eachother names...

Believe me, I know first had about the 6.2's lower end problems. I think people hate these motors cause they've seen the carnage. Plus, the fact that they are slower than dirt dosent help much.

But I have to tell you, most of the problems I've seen all stem from basic neglect. Diesels do require more maintenance than gassers. And the 6.2l is probley more vulnerable cause of its high compression. But if you treat them well, they last, just like any other diesel.

To bgeraurd. Watch what you say or write about someone. If you look at what Beefcake wrote, he said that he didn't want a turbo. A turbo would make the engine more efficient. That would help to increase MPG. I own one in an 84 4x4 1-Ton. My avgerage MPG is about 12. This engine has the Banks Sidewinder system. As far as a better choice, ease and cost, replace a gas engine with a gas engine. He wants to get on the road ASAP.

Nothin' for nothin', but my '86 did worse of about 16 when moving from west Seattle to North Seattle. This invloved lots of freeway, but lots of stop lights when I got off. I had a full load in the back too - bed, dresser, all kinds of crap.
Best I did was about 19-1/2 just driving back an forth to work - almost all freeway driving.
And no turbo.
If you can find a donor that has the complete drivetrain and all associated parts for the deisel, why not. Unless Diesel stays $.30-.40 more than regular than you have to ask yourself is driving this slug worth the $.05 a gallon its saving me?

I should mention that mine is a 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 3.08 locker according to the glove box.
The only issue I have with driving it is on the freeway at about 65-70 it wants to constantly downshift to 3rd on any minor incline. If I had a button I could push on the steering wheel that would drop it out of O/D into 3rd I would do that on any inclines, but manually shifting down is tiresome to do all the time. Plus I'm always scared I might drop 1 too many!!!
So I guess my slug comment isn't totally accurate.

Well Beefcake, what ya gonna do? Use the 6.2 or something else?

Hey sorry aesj2, i didnt mean to jump on you like that. Its just that a lot of people bad mouth the 6.2/6.5 and I just get tired of it. I have two of them and I love them. My friends used to bad mouth my blazer until I was pullin them out like they werent there. Now they all sing a different tune when it comes to older chevy diesel motors.
