Gear Ratio
What is the gear ratio in a 71-72 rear end? I had my gears switched when I came across that rear end since the gears in my 1968 were so low gear. However, I forgot the gear ratio and I have to know because I want my speedo to be correct.

Not enough info, but if I had to guess I would say maybe 3.43, 3.73, or maybe even 4.11, hope this helps.

There Was Not One Gear Ratio In Those Years...you Either Had 3:08,3:42,3:73,or 4:11.... Search The Board Here For Some Threads On How To Figure Out What Ratio You Have..

Josh answered this for me earlier:
If it's a stock 307/3spd they all got 3.73s unless ordered otherwise, 350s got 3.07, big blocks got 3.54 and all sixes got 3.73.

farside, those gears you listed are fairly acurate, but only for 1/2 ton trucks, and all are as base equipment. With certian exceptions (like the 4.10 to a big block) you could get any ratio with any engine tranny combo...but what you listed is fairly acurate for base equipment.
In all reality, it is probably a 3.07 gear. However, i always recomend doing a tooth count on the gears becouse some one could have installed a 3.42 (never factory installed) and the oil probably needs chainged anyways. |

Most any transmission shop should be able to help you with a speedometer calibration. We do this all the time for customers. Any gear ratio or tire diameter change will effect your speedometer/odometer reading. Regards, Jody |
