new seats?
ok in a couple of pictures of trucks on here i seen that they had 99-present silverado/sierra seats in them, well this brings me to my point my dumb$%# sister totaled our 99 Sierra (2 wheel deive) so i was wondering how hard is this mod to make these seats fit in my truck 82 Silverado (2 wheel drive)
any tips any of you have would be great thanks, cb

I just installed a 60/40 bench seat with center console out of a 99' in my 76' last weekend. I have had the seats for about a year and just got around to putting them in. I am real happy with the way it turned out. They are comfortable and look great. Plus, I have a console to put stuff in and still have a bench seat to carry passengers. I can't take much credit for the work as a friend of mine who is good at fabrication and welding did most of the work.
Basically, we took some thin metal strips that we bought at Home Depot and hamerred and bent them to fit the floor of the truck. After alot of taking the seats in and out of the truck and taking measurements, we held our metal strips up against the 99' seats factory brackets and market what we wanted to cut off (the 99' seat brackets are too tall, your head would be in the roof). Next, we welded the molded metal strips to the 99' seat brackets. Finally, we marked and drilled our holes and bolted the seats to the floor. Where we could, we bolted the seats to places in the floor with double thickness, and we used some metal strips under the floor for reinforcement. The hardest bracket to make was the inside bracket for the larger seat since there is deep spot in the center of the floor. We had to actually extend that bracket, rather than cut material off. Like I said, the seats are very comfortable and I feel like I have more room in the truck just about everywhere. One area where we kind of messed up I think, is we had the seat pretty close to the foreward position on the slide when we took our measurements. I'm 5'-6" tall and with the seat all the way forward it is comfortable for me to drive. Anybody shorter would have problems. I think this could have been avoided if we had taken our measurements with the seat further back on the slide. As it is, it will slide back until it hits the cab, but it won't slide forward as far as the stock seat would. I'd be happy to take pictures of the seats and brackets. Somebody, would have to either post them for me or tell me how to do it. Last edited by Greenlee; 04-12-2005 at 04:00 PM. |

Cool! It looks like you used the same seats I did except mine are dark blue. Do you have full adjustment front to back? As I mentioned above, mine don't go as far forward as the stock seat. Are yours power? If so, how hard was that to hook up?
Mine have the buttons for power lumbar, etc. However, I didn't have the motor or hardware so its not hooked up. Mine did come with the manual slide for some odd reason, so I used that. I think it would be pretty cool to hook up all the power goodies at a later date. EDIT: STRANGE, I REPLIED TO COCHINO'S POST, BUT NOW ITS GONE! Last edited by Greenlee; 04-12-2005 at 06:01 PM. |

CbHeEaVsYt From my experience the way the brackets and seats are designed on the 99+ trucks they will NOT work in your truck. They will be too tall. Are you sure you have seen them in 73-87 trucks?....

You are correct though. I would call my seats the 95-98 style, however, I was told they are from a 99'. |

My point is the seats and brackets you have will work just fine (with mods) in a 73-87 truck. The seats from a 99+ truck will not..... BTW- Very nice welding.... Last edited by N2TRUX; 04-14-2005 at 05:35 PM. |

I have a friend who is in to building up 4X4's and is good with a welder. All I did was hand him tools and help him lug the seats in and out of the truck a bunch of times. He is currenlty building an 87' suburban on 2.5 ton Rockwells with four wheel steering. It should be pretty cool when he gets done. However, he is never really done. As soon as he finishes it he will come up with something bigger and better to do to it. I have seen him do this over and over again. |
