trial and error
some say that it can be done inside of the truck. i had a spare 205 in my garage with the right shaft so i started tearing into that first. basically you take off the yoke, then take out the bolts on the cover behind it, tap it a few times with a hammer to get that cover off. then you have to fight with this giant snap ring for about an hour. Next step is to go to the hardware store and get a bigger set of snap ring pliers. pull everything out then put the new stuff in. its really not as complicated as i thought it would be. i do have advice...first get big snap ring pliers..drain case before you start...buy a few cans of cleaner because that gear oil is very messy....grease teh new output shaft then put it in so you can stick all the little roller bearings to the grease..i took mine out of the truck because im an electrician not a mechanic and i dont have the patience to do that stuff in such a tight area.

the snap ring is the hardest part
other than trying to move the heavy case

Maybe I missed earlier post
What was your goal by changing front output shaft? What type was it before and which type afterwards? Source of installed version?
thanks.

originally it had the yoke<cv with ujoint on end> type and i broke my driveshaft. i have a few more front driveshafts but they are all the kind that have the 4 bolt flange thing<cv with circular mount>. i tried to just take off my yoke and put on one of them flange deals but the splines on the shafts are different so i ended up changing out the shaft. the original 205 came from a 70 blazer..the 205 i used for parts came from a 77 3/4 truck. and the 30 spline version is supposed to be stronger than the 10 splined ones. everything on the inside was the same.
