What is this hole for in my short waterpump?

It's a weep hole, when the front seal on the pump goes coolant leaks out there.

If you ever see green fluid under you vehicle on the ground the first place you look is the water pump.Of course you won't have that happen with your new one for many miles.

Isn't the weep hole to protect the bearing so coolant does ruin the bearing if the front seal does go?

Nope...... means seal is not doing its job and pump must be replaced or rebuilt soon or the bearing will go when you don't want it to.

so you can just tap that hole and put a bolt in so fluid stops leaking and sell it, right?

A little piece of wooden dowell works good-it swells up and makes a good seal
