Quick axle questions
I have a 82 Scottsdale and I was curious on a few things.
1) What year axles would be a direct bolt in on this? 2) Will 3/4 ton axles bolt under the truck or not? Thanks!

Any 73-91 Rear Axle and Any 67-88 front axle I believe. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
And 3/4 should be a direct swap. |

Although they will bolt in, the rears changed from 12bolt to 10 bolt starting in 1981. There could be yoke/U-joint differences.
Fronts are the same and 3/4T will swap.

Does anyone know, did they put different rear and front ends in a diesel?
It has been a while since I had my diff covers off, but I could of sworn that the axles I have are 12 bolts. I am just stuck in a problem. I have this truck that has 3.40 in it now. And it has a bad carrier assembly and ring gear in the back. (Carrier assembly is loose and there is actually a tooth missing off the ring gear!) I want to drop to something like a 3.73 gear but I am not sure what to do now. I would need gears for the front. But the rear I would need an entire carrier assembly plus gears. Haven't checked with salvage yards yet, but I am not sure what would be the easiest way to go? Find gears or just swap axles? The 3/4 ton axles got me thinking when I saw someone had a set for sale on the parts board. What would you guys do? Just find a carrier and gears? Swap axles? Go 3/4 ton? Just say screw it, sell the truck, and hike it?

1982 was the phase out year for the 12bolt. It was a hit or miss if you had them or not.
Are you saying the carrier is broken in the rear? or just a tooth? Hard call on what to do, but it would probably be easier to swap rears, but it would have to match the front. If you found a matching set that would eliminate doubt and if it had the gears you wanted, well....

I think it would be easier to just swap the axles. If you use the 3/4 ton running gear somebody has for sale you will end up with a little bit stronger axles. If the rear is a full floater, then it will be alot stronger. It should be a pretty simple bolt in. However, you may need different U-bolts and your drive shaft lengths might change.

There is a missing tooth out of the ring gear and then the carrier assembly is pretty loose in there. The (I believe they are called this) spider gears are sloppy and the whole carrier assembly is kind of loose.
I am not sure what the guy before me did to this truck, but he must of really abused it.
