I bought a 83 truck for my son. The guy that we got it from was making a race truck out of it. Luckily we got it before he started modifying the truck, but after he did the motor and tranny. Motor is a 355, 10.5-1 pistons, 268 cam, Edelbrock Torker II intake, Holley carb with some head work done. Tranny is built 350 with stall. MOTOR HAS NOT BEEN STARTED. No way was I going to leave this motor in for my not yet 16 son. SO, his grandma has given him a El Camino that has been sitting forever. It's a late 70 early 80 model. BUT, it has a 350 and stock tranny as well as all original brackets. So, the plan is to rebuild the Camino motor and tranny and drop it in his 83. The "race" motor will fit nicely in my 67 SWB. Cool. No money outlay for motor and tranny is always a good thing. PLUS, the guy "thru in" a bunch of NEW items: B&M truck mega shifter, Autometer Phantom oil, temp and volt gauges, Wilwood proportioning valve, Accel Dual point distributor and super coil AND a 16 gal fuel cell. The fuel cell will go under the bed of my 67. Plans are to sell the dual point since I have an extra HEI that I will put in, as well as selling the new Lakewood traction bars for a leaf spring GM truck. ALSO have 2 extra short bed drive shafts one of the is ALUMINUM and there is a yolk for a Turbo 400 in the bed as well....
Thanks for letting me ramble. Just getting a little excited that what started out as a 69 short step is now a 67 short fleet and I have a nice motor and trans for it. I can stick on a new master cylinder and be golden to at least move it under it's own power, after the motor swap anyway...

Your not the first one to say that. But, as my son keeps pointing out, his truck has tilt, all power and A/C. Even if it will only have a "stock" motor.

im in high school.....do you know the difference in the looks you get runnin a fast vehicle versus a stock pile? i sure do....

I WAS in high school and I DID have a hot motor. Right up until I blew the motor..... I didn't need a motor like that then, he doesn't need it now. The goal is a nice looking truck with a nice stereo and wheels that is RELIABLE with decent gas mileage and insurance rates. It will have a nice exhaust and he is free to do whatever he wants stereo wise with it. I know he will be rodding it with the stock motor, but I don't want him to have the additional temptation of a more powerful motor. As if his safety wasn't enough to worry about, people at his school are BAD about steeling. His watch has been stolen twice, a school sweatshirt, his cell phone....are just the items I can think of off the top of my head. I don't want to add any additional incentive for someone to steal it. I know it is a big possibility that his stereo is going to get yanked, but if I can keep the truck from seeming like a hot rod, maybe I can save his truck from getting taken. IMO

cmon ive had my truck for 3 years now been drivin it for anout a year and a half with a hot motor and i think as long as you think hes responsible with the power he could drive it. i get on my truck ALOT and i think im a decent driver but the power teaches you to respect the trck and dont be stuipd. a lesson that a slow car/trck wont teach you

Truck won't be slow. I'm rebuilding a 350, not a 250. Stock form will have more power than the 350's of the "muscle" era. The main goal is to keep his cost as low as possible. He doesn't have time to work with all of the sports he is envolved in. He wants/needs somthing that he can depend on being there for him. Transportation. My 67 is our toy. He will be learning all about racing, at the track. I know he will be showing his a$$ regardless of what motor is in the truck. But, gas mileage on a "stock" motor will be much better than a high horse power built motor. It's not so much a matter of trust, as it is piece of mind. I was 16 once myself. And the only thing the hot motor got me was a lot of tickets and high insurance. Bottom line is, I will make sure he has a nice, dependable vehicle for transportation. When it's time to play, he can drive my 67 at the track and at cruises with me.

Is it me or are they missing the point? I'd would have changed my shorts over a polka dotted Gremlin when I was in high school! Great score. Glad you are bringing the boy into wrenchdom.

He is so deep into wrenchdom now it's scary. My son and I are as close as a dad and kid can get. We have the same taste in cars and trucks and that's scary in itself....I have a lead foot and he knows it. He will eventually have a nice street ride, but why put the money into one now as a first vehicle? I know of more than one person, including me, that screwed up their first ride. Be it their fault or not, something always happens. I would prefere to keep the price of the first year with a license down. He already knows that if he keeps his nose clean we will upgrade the motor before his junior year. I have driven a truck over the road and have had more safe driving classes than I can count. However, because of those classes, I am a much better driver and I am teaching him the same practices. I know he will be a good driver, I also know what peer pressure can do.

fade94- you are going about it the right way. You sound like a responsible parent letting him learn at the track where it's controlled!. He doesn't need any more power right now with such limited driving experience and peer pressure.

I had a mildly hot motor in HS...luckily i didn't get it built until i was about 17, if i would have had it when i freshly turned 16 i can only imagine all the stupid stuff i would of done. Luckily i started off with a slow S10 4x4 but i rodded the heck out of it anyway.
