hey guys ive been working like mad to get the new motor in the '82 GMC fired, and after all the thrashing i have a no start, i dont even get a click at the solenoid, so...i ran to the parts store and got another starter, same mess...
i think im missing a wire, but i cant find it! here is how i have it hooked there are 3 terminals on the starter the first terminal,(from left looking from front of truck) is marked R, and i have nothing on it... the second terminal is the main and i have the main hot battery lead and another ring terminal that has two like 10 gauge wires hooke to it on that terminal... the 3rd terminal is marked S, and i have a single wire with a small terminal hooked to it... for some reason it wont crank, i think im missing a wire, and im worried like crazy please help later Dan

If you have access to the book ' How to build Hot rod trucks' by jim clark look on page 107. there is a very clear diagram. Basically the larger of the three terminals should be connected to battery and, via gauge, Alternator. second terminal to ignition, third terminal to coil.
hope this helps. |

here's another diagram. did you try a remote starter switch to determine if it's the starter itself or rest of ignition system? then back track to the ignition switch? check the fuseable links? battery charged? check block on firewall to the left of wiper motor, for bad contacts or corrosion (in first diagram above)? if it started before motor pull and reinstall, should start now. I don't have any pics of a chevy starter wired up presently. even my pu's starter is blocked by the headers. maybe someone else does, but your's should be correct anyway by description.

Follow the voltage trail
Is there power to other areas like dome lights? If not, I would check the two connections at the junction block on the fire wall. Mine is a little older, but I had the same problem a few days ago and after chasing voltage from the battery to the starter to the fuse back on the fire wall, I found a loose connection on the junction box. The fuseable links were ok. The wire was not tightly connected. Tightened it up and then had power. Good luck!
