A dumb question
I know this is a lame question that I should know the answer to but oh well. I have an 84 GMC with part time 4wd (its got the lever that says 2h, n, 4h, 4L). Is the front driveshaft supposed to spin in 2wd? I thought it was only supposed to spin in 4wd. I cant tell if my 4wd is working because the light for it on the dash is burnt out. Thanks

It is not uncommon for the the front driveshaft to turn some on a part time truck. Oh and we do not have dumb questions here. You may want to check both of your hubs to see if they are locking and unlocking. If one isnt working properly it could cause the shaft to turn.

This might not be your problem, but a lot of people who are somewhat serious about 4wheelin' like to replace the electric hubs with manual ones. If you want to do that it should be cheap.

My 86 had automatic hubs. I got rid of them fast. She'll be back.

To add a bit to Mudder's reply about the front DS spinning in 2WD, it will be a slow, lazy spin caused by parasitic drag in the front diff. It will not be spinning nearly as quickly as the rear DS as you drive. If you can have a friend look under your truck as you drive by, the difference wiil be obvious. If the front is spinning as rapidly as the rear, it may be a stuck hub or two, or the transfer case might be in 4WD mode instead of 2WD.
Good luck - let us know what you find!

Well my trucks before had manual hubs so I didnt know much about the automatic ones. I drove it in reverse and the put it in 2wd and the hubs unlocked. Since I just bought this truck they must have been locked from being put in 4wd before I bought it. I would like to convert them to manual when I get some money. I had warn hubs on my 85. Anyhow thanks for the replys.
