18" boyd wheels

`How do you think a set of 18x8" boyd coddington timeless wheels would look on a 76 stepside, and do you think 5 inch backspacing all the way around would sit nicely? thanks for the input..

I think they would look fine, but 20's would look better. Why are you considering 18's? If it's just to save money, check the cost of tires before you decide. Although I haven't priced 18's in a while the last time I looked it was cheaper to buy 20's and you had a much better selection of sizes.

If you trying to save money go with 17's. If you really want the look of big wheels, step on up to 20's....

i actually wanted to go with 20's but i have heard that you lose alot of ride quality. I also wanted, and have always wanted a set of Boyd Coddington's on it, I wanted to put smoothies on it if I go 20's but I can't find any boyds at a good price. Anywho, any more input???

Ride quality has nothing to do with the size of the rim. Ride quality will degrade if you go with a low profile tire regardless of what size the rim is. In other words it doesn't matter if you put a 30 series tire on a 15" rim or a 20" rim it will ride stiff.....

But the larger the rim, the less rubber you have between the truck and the ground. An 18 should ride a little better than a 20 given the same diameter tire.

I had Budnik 18's on the blazer and liked the look I had with the 5/7 drop...I was also running a 295/45 tire in the rear on a 9.5" rim and a 245/35 on a 8" rim on the front. The back spacing was 6" rear and 5" front.

I agree with Ken on this one...it's not the size of the rim, it's the amount of sidewall you run that makes the difference in ride quality...

And if you want to go big...go 22's...

Blazer w/ 18's

'79 w/22's

I paid more for the wifes 18" Cooper Zeons than I will be for my 20" Falken Ziex's.

true!!

I paid almost as much for the Nitto 555's on the 18's as I did for the Hankook's on the 22's.

That is my point. Assuming the diameter of the two tires is the same (larger wheels usually use tires with a lower profile to keep the tire height reasonable), the one with the smaller wheel will have more sidewall and a better ride.

I see now that N2TRUX is assuming the same aspect ratio even on a larger wheel, which results in a larger diameter tire.

I guess we can't speak in generalities unless we know what tire/wheel combination would be used.

gotcha! Your saying if you keep the same overall diameter....

Yeah I guess I doidn't make my point clear enough. What I am saying is you always hear that running large diameter wheels causes a rough ride. The diameter of the wheel has nothing to do with ride quality, it's the profile of the tire.

Granted when you go to a larger diameter wheel you will probably need to go to a lower profile tire for clearence, but that is a different problem all together....

BTW- Crush is this your truck now? You better get us more pics....and hurry...

Depending on the drop, the 5" bs on the front should work ok. In the rear, you could go with less backspacing. You could also go with a wider wheel in the rear like 10" with a 5"bs. What size tires are you considering?

FYI, the Discount Tires site has 18" BC Smoothies listed for about $310 each and about $400 each for 20s.

I have the Boyd's Rodder 5's on my Blazer, 17x8 w/ 4.5" backspacing in the front, 18x9 w/4.5 bs in the back. Tires are 245/45 17s and 275/40 18s. I kinda wish I would have gone with 18s in the front though, I think it would've looked better. Ride is decent and I don't have any clearance issues besides the front wheel rubbing the wheel well if I hit a big bump. It would probably ride better without air shocks in the rear but I don't have a c-notch so I've only got 2" of travel. Make sure you can get the tires in the size you want for a decent price, mine are about $130 and $180 for some Nittos.

Got any pics of your Blazer, Ben?
From your description, it sounds nice.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics, but I'm hoping to get the digital camera from my girlfriend sometime soon and figure out how to post some. I'm pretty much done with the exterior of the truck but I'm still working on the interior. It's hard to find the time to work on it, since it's my daily driver and I have to be able to finish up whatever I'm doing so I can get to work the next day.

Thanks man....it's been a four year project so far....hope to be done in the next 6-8 months.

The color is PPG Aston Martin Cumberland Grey. I looked through paint chips for a week before I found one that i liked.....this one has a slight greeninsh tint to it due to the mixture of copper and silver flake in the paint...pics don't do it justice!
