New to 60 - 66's coming over from 67-72's
Thought I would say hello and Introduce myself. I live in Portales, New Mexico and for sometime have been in to the 67 - 72 truck scene. Always wanted a 62' (my birth year - ya I know Ol' Man) but couldnt located one. was driving home the other day and spotted an early 60's SWB Stepside and stopped to ask, (long story short) ends up it was a 62' and is it is now in the driveway.
Came out of Roswell, New Mexico (Good ol' dry dusty desert truck) the Good: Already changed over to a front coil suspension, power steering, power brakes, 350/TH350, disk front, drum rear 5 lug all around, HEI, Steering column changed out to a 80's chevy truck, The the bad: wood bed is rotted out, Body has been sanded down and put in primer, some light surface rust showing, power steering leaking, wrong Qjet ( runs a bit rich) I am looking forward to participating on this board, and getting some good information from you the experts on these model years. Was over on the 67 - 72 portion before, sold my 68 SWB step now that I found what I was looking for ( The wife won't let me have too many toys.) These are all new to me, looking to eventually do a body off custom resto, with a suspension drop etc. Derek Franz |

Thanks for the welcomes, it is great to finally be on this side of the board after looking High and low for a 62' short step.
Don't get me wrong I liked the 67-72's but my heart has always leaned towards the (red headed step child) the 60-66's. doesn't seem to be as much info and reproduction parts for our years, hopefully that will change.

I'd be careful if I were you! Aliens were always crappy with a wrench (3 left hands).

Hot and dry that is an understatement at times here in New Mexico. have seen 115 degree days, and dry whew....
going to pull the bed, start resanding, get any and all rust addressed and at least get it sealed in epoxy primer, then start on the bed, want to repalce the rear left fender (spare tire cut out) and both steps, looks like they were cut/modified for exhaust pipes (straight up like on 18 wheelers)

Rust will pop through epoxy primer. It did for me. I used the dupont system, the green self etching then the filler. Rust popped through even though I sandblasted that stuf clean. No dark spots or anything. You might want to look into a rust neutralizer like coreless from eastwood. Im not saying if it works or not because I havent seen any of the parts I have used it on after a few years yet, just saying it is something to look into.

I know this is probabley better posted on the Paint thread, but I will ask anyhow, any good suggestions on the control/elimination of this cancer? I have heard of POR15 etc. but what about body panels, whole cabs etc?
