Intake Gaskets Q's

I'm ready to install the Holley Street Dominator that I git from MikeFiles(thanks Mike) and I'm wondering about the different types of gaskets, the pro's and cons of each. What are you guys using and what have you used that has came back to bite you in the a$$. Just looking for a little help.

It really depends on the types of mating surfaces you have. I've had mixed luck with the old school fiber gaskets. I have iron heads with an aluminum intake. Since both metals expand and contract at different rates it can cause some problems over time. I switched to felpro gaskets with the rubber o-ring around the water ports, and that seemed to work better - although I had to change the way I was sealing the front and back of the lifter valley (most people don't use the rubber seals that come with the gasket kit for those areas---they just lay down a bead of sealer). I was using black RTV, which worked great when I had a cast iron intake. When I went to the aluminum it didn't seal worth a damn, and I had oil all over the back of my engine. I had to go with copper RTV instead, which is pretty strong stuff. I'm not looking forward to removing it.

Go to summit racing (http://www.summitracing.com) and look at some of their intake gasket kits. I'm a huge fan of felpro.

I've also always been a fan of felpro stuff. I dont mind paying more money for a better product either. Being that this is the first time that I will be adding an aftermarket intake I wanted to know if anybody had any insight on it. Thanks for the reply cobalt.

Here's what Edelbrock has to say about gaskets:

"DO NOT use the Fel-Pro Permatorque/Blue intake gaskets. Because of their very hard, non-pliable construction, they don't compress well when used with an aluminum intake manifold. Instead, use a Fel-Pro Printoseal or Mr. Gasket UltraSeal gasket. The factory composition-type embossed gasket also works satisfactorily."

Edelbrock told me the same thing about my 2101 to. Also Cobalt I used black rtv on my edelbrock and I got the same problem you have but on the front.
Looks like its time to pull it and redo it.

I have used the fell pro blue many times with the alluminum edelbrock intakes, and have never had a problem.


As for one NOT to use...the torque plus intake gaskets...with the scteens over the intake ports...they get blown out and sucked into the cylinder and can do BAD stuff.
I have a write up on them in the FAQ...at first they seemed like the shiznit...but later when I popped the intake off I felt like crying.

when installing the RTV sealer on the front and rear rails and on bottm of intake.....use a punch in the sealing area....top and bottom......
i use the drill....to make dimples.....to hold the silicoin rtv in place works like a champ....been doing it for years....never use the rubber pieces that come with the set.....MARK

Advance sells a Mr Gasket intake gasket that works fine,I use'em on my Super Stock engine with know problems!

I like Mr Gasket stuff too. Which to choose, felpro-MR gasket? felpro-mr gasket, felpro-mr gasket, felpro-mr gasket. Yup I'm gonna redo the valve covers too.
