A buddy of mine gave me an HEI distributor for free, but i'm not sure if it's the one i need or not. It has three wires with a plug on the end. Is this the one that is used for the swap, or is this a computer controlled one?? thanks guys

Sounds like the right one. Does it have the vacuum advance on it?

If the plug is rectangular in shape, and plugs into the cap, and it is the only plug on it, then good score.
If it is an oval weather pack type plug, with the 3 wires in it...in addition to the plug going to the cap, then it is the early computer controlled one. There is a way to make the early computer ones work, but I don't remember how to do it.

What parts should I change on it before I install it? Is there a "rebuild" kit you can buy? Thanks guys

What I normally do is check the end play on the shaft. If it is more than .010 to .012 I remove the gear and use washers of the right thickness to adjust the end play. Before reinstalling the gear the shaft is removed, cleaned and lubed with "Lubri-plate". (If the bushings or shaft is worn, they are replaced).

After reinstalling the shaft, I install new advance weights and springs. When it is back together I set the advance curve on my distributor machine. (I use the kit from Summit but the advance kits are available from other sources, also).

The vacuum advance is checked for operation and replaced if necessary.
