Exclamation help

does anyone have a qjet type carb for sale for cheap? Ive been having problems with my truck lately. thought it to be a vacuum leak. but I believe it is the carb taking a crap dive. I put a supposed right baseplate gasket on the carb and it ran like a dream for about 4 mins. then I went to turn right at a red light. and it died on me* like it had been* and I tried to start it, got it to run. but acted like it was on one cylinder and throwing black exhaust. so that tells me its just pouring raw gas down there. anyway long story about 30 mins and 1/2 mile *just went around the block to test it* later I got home. and noticed that when I was trying to back up. the exhaust was diesel black. I took out a couple sparkplugs and they were black. the cleanest they've been from oil. but none the less black and smelled of gas. so I put on the gasket that I changed and it runs under its own power. but still far from befor the problem started. and this is the only running car at the moment. and am acutaly looking for a new car if I cant get this thing runing well enoguht to get us by. thank you very much for your help. I am at my last hopes. matt

Hmmm...when was the last time the carb was gone through? You could be having float and/or power piston problems, and those aren't usually too hard to fix.

Hey 79, I checked in the shop and I don't have a spare. You might check ebay and do a search for quadrajet carburetor. I've seen some go pretty cheap that might get you by for a while. Sorry I couldn't help you out more. Good luck.

I have one!

I just used it to break my 355 in, so I am fairly sure it is good!

How does 50 + shipping sound? The carb was rebuilt shortly before I got it. I then ran it on my truck for several months before I pulled the engine out to re-condition it It sat for a while, but when I went to break the engine in, she fired right up like I ran it the day before (after priming the fuel bowl of course, lol)

Probally need to tune it up a bit though, its tuning is set for a 305, I just never bothered to tune it when I got it.

EDIT -- Oh yeah, its got an electric choke BTW

That engine has better compression than mine does, mine was about 140 in all the cylinders! Try idling it up a bit, and see what that does. Also, see if you cannot borrow a vaccum gauge so you can check to see what kind of vaccum it is pulling. Should be 18 - 20 inches of vac or so.

I do have a vac gauge, just cant find it LOL. but with the amount of oil my motor goes through. it probably had some oil in there to bump the numbers up. she has a hesitation in her. the mechanic replaced all the plugs too. it helped alot. but she still bogs down when I get off a stop. and going up hills can be an adventure. when I left the guy, I was going up a rather steep hill *short but steep enough that when your driving and your going down you dont see the road lol. it was back firing and sputtering. which is something its never really done. and when I left my sisters *the place I was going* I was trying to start it and it reversed backfired and white smoke started billowing out of the motor. thought the dang thing was on fire. so shes got alot of problems. it has a rod/berring nock at start up. and needs new heads......Russell- can you give me a quote to ship the carb? zip is 98037. and is that carb for a th 350? were looking for a cheep car. to get mom to work. but were going to be moving and will need the truck to run good enough to do some work. just looking at all our options. if you guys got any more ideas. I will do my best to anwser them and mabe we can get the girl to last a little bit longer for me to have more money to figure out what would be best. that would be great. thanks for the helps. matt

Hmm, that sounds a bit more serious... White smoke = blown headgasket

Also, the sputtering on hills thing sounds like the float in your carb might be a bit messed up.

To be brutally honest with ya -- Why not find another running 350 and drop it in there? You can probally get it done within a week of evenings, or two long days if you have never done so before. I can get cheap 350s all day long, much easier than trying to keep a lemon running. Esspecially if the thing has a rod knock, and what sounds like a blown headgasket, not to mention the fact that it is burning oil...

However, I'll get ya the quote on that carb ASAP anyways

well because I live in an apartment and I dont have all the tools to do such a big task and I dont have the money to do that right now. but if I do keep the truck, that is something I want to do. I've been looking online *craigslist.org awesome website* and been seeing 305-454's for sale for pretty cheep. but right now. its just something I cant do. as much as it pains me. I've even looked at finding a truck simular to ours and yanking the good things off it. Ive seen a 77 chevy 1/2ton and the add says strong runner for 500 and thats the whole truck. so just if I get the rear and motor out of it and it lasts me till next year it would be worth it. oh yeah to put the cherry on top. my 12 bolt rear is whining and my starter is going out LOL these last couple days have been stress full lol. its like what else will go wrong!!! Lol thanks for looking for the quote. matt

You give them your bank account number, and they safely transfer money to other people

However, a money order (not one of the green ones, I cannot cash them up here) or a crisp 20 will be fine
