You might try your local Chevy dealer and asking for p/n: 10141202. That's the 3-groove harmonic balancer for 292s.

Check out ebay, you can get a brand new rebuilt damper for $50 plus a $25 core charge from damperdoctor.

Anyone have picutres of a 3 groove balancer? I have one but the spacing of the grooves seems weird.

The 73+ did have different spacing on the grooves...more spacing between.
72- had a two & three groove style. I recommend the two groove, if you don't need the extra, because that three groove is a heavy beast.
The 250 & 292 balancers "look" the same. If they are, the 250 may be easier to find...and you may have to remark the timing notch. There seemed to be several combinations.

I seem to remember from reading that the 250 and the 292 are NOT suppose to be interchanged. I would like to know for sure, but I surely wouldnt do that on mine.

...well, I wouldn't do it either, unless I knew/checked "IF" they interchanged. Maybe the Stovebolt site has some answers or someone with a parts book.

I just looked at a Hemmings and the 250 is a different listing than the 292. So it is 292 or nothing.

I ran the factory 3-groove in my last 292. (1977-2002) I think at the time I bought it, that was the only dealer HB available for a 292. The rings were evenly spaced as I recall. According to Leo Santucci [ from whose book I lifted the GM p/n] the 292 runs better with a heavier balancer, the heavier the better to absorb all that excess vibration from the long-stroked "HD-TD". On my new build-up I have a 2-groove. My machinist got it for me. He won't reveal his source, but said it was made in Australia. (?) To run just the alternator, I really need only one groove. HBs from a 250 are much lighter in mass. At least the ones I've seen. But I never ran a 250 in any of my trucks.
Fischer Dampers are supposed to be neater than sliced bread, but they're expensive, hard to get now and (most important) require re-engineering all your pulleys and brackets for accessories.

I bought a Pioneer brand balancer for my 350 V8 from Performance Automotive Warehouse. The balancer was made in Australia. Perhaps Pioneer is the secret source.

www.pawengineparts.com Their catalog doesn't list 6-cylinders, but they might be able to get one.

The June 05 Hot Rod magazine has an article on building a 292, they recommend Vector at www.fisherconcepts.net . They show both a grooved balancer and one that uses bolt on pulleys from a small block. I have also used the Damper Doctor (formerly Damper Dudes) with good results.
