Can someone explain to me why people buy classic cars/truck and then let them rott? I've been passing this truck a couple of blocks from my house for over two years now, it's a super clean SWB just rotting away. It's been sitting there so long the tires are flat.

Agree, they might be just a few bucks away (continually) from finally being able to start working on that restoration project!

Or it was their parent's or whatever......Or maybe holding on to it as an "investment" hoping it'll go up in value in the future.

For years I covetted a 58 Impala sitting abandoned in a body shope, and I do mean YEARS!

Finally got the bodyshop owner's permission to "get rid of it" and the "owner" of the car finally returned one of the shop's calls and brought them more money to work on the car.

Was I entitled to the car...no, did I want it , YES! Did I feel robbed because I didn't get it? Yes for a short period of time I felt a loss.

I'd be willing to bet 90% of us here are guilty of it. Look at the list of vehicles under some people's names....no way they drive them all....some do, but most don't. I have a 58, 67, and 69 chevy trucks currently "rotting." Would I sell any of them? Hell no. Technically a "trailer queen" "sits and rots" too. They are never really driven. With fuel prices climbing ever higher, I'd expect to see even more "rotting" vehicles. I've given up wondering why. It just happens. Shame? YES! Anything we can do about it? Not really.

Since he parked it he gained weight and can no longer squeeze in to change out the flat tires so that he can move it! Find out from the manager who owns it and see if it is for sale. Your Cheyenne can't need anymore money at this time and may appreciate a brother!

Indeed, I'd also vote for asking him if its for sale and say that you'll take better car of it because most likely you will. Infact I have 2 neighbors, one with my dads old 72' 2wd Blazer that my dad had back in the late seventies and the guy has stored it in his garage for the last 15 years saying he is going to restore it. My other neighbor has a 71 or 72 SWB that is sitting in his garage with a bunch of parts and boxes laying on it.....it's been in that condition for the last 7 years. It makes me sick. Another guy that lives up the street has a 67' Shelby GT-350, that he hardly ever drives but at least he takes it out of the garage, runs it and washes it.

I also vote for asking whats up and offer something like 2 grand for it. Just to see what the reaction is. If it is up for grabs and you're not interested, "hook a brotha up". I'm dying to get a SWB. Theres a clean 68 running around localy, some old man. I've seen him a couple of time and the next time i see him I'm going to run into him just to get him to stop and ask if he'll let it go.

I drive the delta and the F150 on a regular basis (daily in the case of the ford). the chevy hasn't moved since january, but that is also in the process of being torn down for restoration. It's sitting in a nice heated, insulated, cement floored pole barn collecting dust with an 83 CJ7. I'd use it this summer for work around the property, but I don't want to risk denting those irreplaceable bedsides.

Hey, at least the Camaro is under cover!. My uncle who I got my truck from had let it sit for 5 years because he couldn't get it runninng right. He also has a 34 Plymouth (I think its' a Plymouth) sitting under a tarp that he brought from his previous house more than 20 years ago. It has sat in the same spot since they moved in, and never moved at the old house either. No driveline, no floor, just a frame and body with 4 wheels. I have NEVER owned a vehicle that just rotted, and I doubt I ever would. All 3 of mine are in running condition. Now the Camaro is getting ready to sit for a while next winter while it gets painted, but it will be in the garage. The PO of the Camaro also let it sit for about 5 years because he was going to get to it someday, and finally came to realize that someday would never come. At least it was under a lean to roof. I can't figure out why anyone would let any vehicle rot away either, classic or not.

I'm pretty sure the Camaro is his as well, I've seen it out and about a couple of times.

I've never had much luck with leaving notes on cars but what the hell, I'l give it a shot, can't hurt.

Smitty, I wish it were true but there always seems to be something to improve! I'm getting ready to have more painting done, ouch!

I have left a few notes on cars/trucks like that, and only ever gotten one call back. It was an orange and white '71 lwb C/10 that is 5 minutes from my summer job. It had been sitting for years, but apparently when I left the note was when the owner started having work done on it. It had a tach dash, body wasn't badly rusted, but both of the trailing arms were rusted through in a scary way. IIRC he wanted like $7k for it, I had a hard time not laughing at him over the phone. Later that summer I did indeed see it sitting at a service station, and its gone now, so hopefully he is driving it.

My truck has been off the road for over a year

But in all reality, there is nothing I can do to combat this. I am broke. I can't afford to replace the clutch, starter, windshield, get both driveshafts redone, and get 4 new wheels and tires that would be necessary just to drive it. If I could do that somehow, I could not afford to keep gas in the tank and keep it & my Buick insured simultaneously. My parents are kind enough to let me park it in their driveway, flat tire and all.
So now it just languishes, waiting for when I have money and some time to devote to it.

sitting there rotting is a good alternative to being sent to the crusher like most do. At least it still has a chance of survival. If I had the money I would have a couple of acres of tri-fives, pre 72 vettes, pre 67 chevelles and novas, and YES I would also have some 40's f o r d s and pre 70 stangs (there I used the f word go ahead and flame me)

I can understand the whole "lettin`it sit" thing.It`s most likely money.It takes alot of money to do things these days.It`s not hard to fall in a hole.He probably loves that thing like we love ours(or more),but it needs more than he can do right now.I had a Blazer I swapped the TH350/NP 205 out into my work truck that needed a clutch.I had just bought my first house,it was January and I was tapped-out.Did the swap outside over the weekend.I planned to put the 4spd in the Blazer later.Then I bought a parts Blazer for $400 with TH350/NP205.Never got the time between runnin`my business,fixing up the ol`1857 house,2 kids,and keeping up on my`71 work truck.The truck got stolen later on and the Blazer sat for 5 years as a glider kit.I finally gave in to a young boy that asked about it.Sold it at a loss.The parts Blazer is still stting(where nobody sees it and I still have the donor Blazer that originally housed the TH350/NP205 that I swapped-in to the 1st Blazer(the one I swapped-out to the truck.There was a time when it seemed I could do it all.Then,it came to a halt.It took a long time to accept I just didn`t have time.It doesn`t bother me to have all this stuff though.It`s all become more rare and I have it.All I need is time.I have the rest of my life.

Well i have to admit that this isnt my first go on restoring an old truck. When i was 19 i bought a basketcase 69swb and parked it in a cage near a busy road and i must have gotten at least 2 dozen offers to buy it before i even had a chance to begin working on it and shortly after i began working on it after it had sat there for so long i find out my wife is pregnant and all the money i had saved to restore that old truck had a new purpose so i finally ended up having to sell it.

I guess thats why its so important to me to finish my new project so fast.

When i was 19 i bought a basketcase 69swb and parked it in a cage near a busy road and i must have gotten at least 2 dozen offers to buy it before i even had a chance to begin working on it and shortly after i began working on it after it had sat there for so long i find out my wife is pregnant and all the money i had saved to restore that old truck had a new purpose so i finally ended up having to sell it. I guess thats why its so important to me to finish my new project so fast.
