Well, cab is off to be dipped!!
I dropped off the cab to my '72 on Friday to be dipped. They said I should get it back in 2-3 weeks. I will post some pictures when I get it back.

It's going to be dipped in a huge tank of acid to eat away all of the rust, paint, bondo.....basically the only thing that will come out is clean, new, white metal. It will be stripped down to bare metal.

I am looking for someone that does this in the southeast. How do you go about finding someone that provides this service?

I found out about this place just thru word of mouth. I also saw them later when they had a booth set up at the Portland Rod and Custom Show. They had a '57 Ford Fairlane convertible body that they had done. That's what convinced me to do this. There's just no way of getting inside all of the places where you don't have access to (A-pillars, inside the roof panels, inside the rockers, etc). This way will get everything.

Where is the place? Can you give us a ball park on how much it costs? I've only see bodies dipped in magazines, never a real person doing it. Very curious how it goes... Make sure you post some pictures as soon as you get it back!

It's in North Portland (off of Martin Luther King and Vancouver Way). It's called American Metal Cleaning. They have recently raised their prices but I was quoted about six months ago and they're going to honor their quote. It's going to cost me $650 for the dipping of the cab and then there's a $150 charge for the phosphate coating they do afterward so that you can shoot it in primer without sanding anything. Their prices now are around $800 for the cab and I think $175 for the phosphate coating.

Well, you don't. But they didn't from the factory either. But, I don't plan on using this as an every day driver. So if it lasted the last thirty years facing all of the elements and being beat-up as a daily driver/work truck, I figure once it's all cleaned out again and I only drive it on nice, sunny days, it should be fine. It will outlast me anyways.

I always heard 'dipping' actually cleaned up the crevices too well and it was near impossible to re-seal the assembled cab after this is done?

I sure hope not ST, Please let us know how it goes If this works and works well then I see a lot of folks trying it at those prices. One question, did you weld in cab supports to brace the cab when you took the doors off? or do you just leave the front end intact, strip it and remove it from the frame. Any pics of how you sent it off to them? thanks

The only down side to this that I have seen is that it does eat up the factory seam sealer (it eats everything but the bare metal). But the cab shouldn't come apart or not be able to reseal. The panels are just spot welded together and then the sealer is put over those seams. This process shouldn't have anything to do with the spot welds or the cab coming apart. Should be easy stuff. I did not do anything to the cab (as far as bracing goes). I stripped it down to the bare bones and hauled it in. They tie ropes around the four pillars and dunk it in the tank. It shouldn't do anything to the body at all. I've got to get all of my pictures rounded it up and I will post them.

timmosams,
There's a place downtown in Atlanta called "Unpaint" that does this. I had them dip my gas tank. Their phone number is (404) 755-3329 and they can dip just about any anything automotive or otherwise. |

And the last one. It wouldn't put the pictures in order if I posted them all together. Sorry for all the separate posts.
