It helps a lot if it's empty!
You need to swing the bottom away from the back wall, then work the filler neck down through the grommet while you lift the end opposite the filler. You'll end up with the tank at about a 45 degree angle before you get it out of there (another reason for emptying it first). As far as I know, there isn't anything other than bolts holding it in. Look for any hidden bolts up by the filler, I can't remember any when I did mine though. Also, you may need to pull the seatbelts to get room to swing the tank out.

Also, cut the grommet if it's giving you too much trouble. It's old and hard so it may be your trouble. New ones aren't that much at Chevy Garage and you'll probably want a new one anyway.

Its easy once you get the hang of it Dave. Just requires a little wrassling. It helps to have a buddy push on the filler neck while you pull and wobble it around from the other side. Should just pop right out and no need to destroy and have to replace the grommet.

Just removed mine.
I wound up slitting the old rubber hoses. Going to replace them anyway. I left them on so I know what lenght to get when I put them back. The tank wouldn't come out even though I had removed all the bolts. Figured out that the driver's side seat belt bolt was over the lip of the tank. After I removed that, I slid it out the passenger's side. Now if I could only remember where I put it> |

I think Paul has the right idea- I am pretty sure the seat belt bolts were in the way of mine. If you take a screwdriver or something flat and pry the grommet lip on the outside of the truck, you can push it through without too much fuss and only worry about the other end of teh tank.

I just removed the tank this week
No trouble with the grommet or the seatbelt. I thought that it was almost empty, but it turned out that it had more than 7 gallons still in it Didn't have any problems with spilling it One thing amazes me though, after emptying the tank there is still a small amount of gasoline in the tank, but whatever I do, it won't come out...
