Well it was a beautiful day so I went for a spin, put a $20 in the tank, only
got 8.5 gallons out of it, Premium stuff, on the way home had a few issues, stopped at a buddies, died as I pulled into his drive, flooded out I think, it was at least 15 minutes before I could get her to fire off, got 3/4 of the way home and you guessed it, died again, another 15 minutes of sitting, I was pulling into the garage and, you guessed it, died again, 15 minutes & she fired off, put her in the garage and just shook my head, I'm no motor guy and I'm at a complete loss, any ideas, thanks in advance for your ![]()

Oh brother, that can sure take the fun out of a nice drive. Tough to arm chair quarter back. Are you smelling gas when she dies like that? I would make sure I have spark after she dies, I remember a post from awhile back that may have had a similar issue, I think it turned out to be something with his distributor or coil. Was it Orangevol?
I would just go back to all the basic stuff, spark, fuel pump (are you getting gas) etc. and go from there. Good Luck.

Hmmmm, didn't notice any black smoke, however it just has headers
with turn downs on it, as far as the carb, my last truck had a 400 in it with about half the power of this truck and a 750 carb on it, had to go to a 850 to run it down the track, so im unsure about that, as far as the unilight, was on it when I purchased it from the PO. ![]()

Sounds like something ignition related heats up then goes bad. I would check for spark while it is having one of its trouble periods

does it have a quadrajet? my buddies impala did the same exact thing. someone replaced the stone filter in the carb with a paper one and for some reason when it got hot the paper filter would collapse. it took us a ong time to figure that one out.

Makes for a long ride...
![]() As noted above, you need to find it while it's acting up. How does it run just before it dies? Just stops or stumbles then dies? Does it run normal when you do get it to start up again? If it's flooding (due to floats), it would at least run at higher rpm's and quit at idle and yes, smoke when restarted. If it stumbles (giving it gas and not getting any real response) it may be starving for fuel. If it just plane quit's with no warning, check ignition system. Good kuck. |

After it dies does it try to start or are you getting nothing when you turn the key?

Sounds like ignition issues to me. I'd double check all the wiring from the key on. In both of my trucks, the ignition switch went bad and melted the plug into the back of the switch. It took me forever to figure out what was happening to my '69 (put in a new disty, cap, plugs & wires, control modual, rebuilt the carb...), but it was one of the first things I checked when it happened in my '72.

you throw her in neutral and rev her she acts fine, I agree with checking her while she is dead, but it died away from home, lol, the main thing that sucks is, all this stuff is new, less than 50 road miles on the whole set-up ![]()

That is my first guess. I know you don't get to run GQ that much. And with that being said it mite be a good time and re-check the time-ing and such. I have used Mallory UniLights without much of a problem but I'm just one guy.
How is your Elevation comaired to Cail? You mite have to lean it out a little as well. Personaly I think the 750 is a little big for a 4X4, But You mite have different Ideas for GQ than what I would....lol Is that intake a Single plane or duel? Anyway thats my .02 Eric

Luv, after your last post about "reaking of gas" it is doing exactly what I was just going through. I bought a $30 carb rebuild kit and problem was solved. Mine also has sat since Sept. with just a few starts in between, so the carb was full of crap. If I remember right, you have a new tank. In my case my tank is original and probably full of garbage so I am waiting on a new tank so I won`t repeat this problem after the rebuild.

This Motor Was Built Specificaly For Him To Drop Into A
32 Coupe, Hence The 750 Carb, It Will Rotate All 4 Tires W/ It In 4 Wheel High Like It's Nuthin, I Really Kinda Like It, I Don't Personally Think It Is Too Much Carb, I Will See If I Can Find Someone Close To Me To Check Out The Carb, As Far As The Intake, The Model Is Listed Above, No Idea. ![]()

Your Motor is quite nice The PO did a heck of a job on everything that was done to GQ. Where I live and 4wheel at in Colorado a 750 and a single plane intake would not work real well. I would be real rich at 10,000 ft. I tend to stay around a 600cfm. That is the only reason I question the 750.
Right now I'm in just north of Bristol about the 72 mile post on I-81 and I'm looking at my GPS and the Elevation here is Only 2472'ft a big difference than the places I like to play in Colo. lol Dual plane Holley Street Dominator intake manifolds are designed to exceed the performance of most OEM 4-barrel intake manifolds. With their low-rise or medium-rise configuration, divided plenum, and dual plane runner layout, they provide excellent low and mid-range power output--from idle up to as high as 5,200 rpm. They can take several carb types and sizes, and will enable you to maximize street performance. I guess thats the right intake if so your ok there. Heck Craig you'll get off ok either by what your Mec Buddy said by running GQ a little more or just by cleaning that carb out a little bit. Either way it's Another reason for you to get your butt in gear and get GQ done! lol Eric

if you go to figure out how much carb you need for an engine the formula is something like... (Engine displacement X Max RPM) devided by 3456 and then take that answer and multiply it by the engines efficiency witch on an engine that isnt forced induction and street should be around 85% or .85 after that formula you should know roughly what CFM carb you need....
i hoped that helped a little.... if it runs better with a larger carb then the smaller one or the one ment for it wasnt tuned right and needed bigger jets Rat
