Why does that not supprise me. More scamming by the ultimate scam artists = Insurance Companies!
It seems they have the statistics to back them up though if its true about the percentage of modified vehicles involved in accidents. Think we should start a letter writing campaign to SEMA? |

As long as some companies still offer insurance that'd be okay.
If ALL insurance companies become like that I'll never modify a vehicle and I'm sure a lot of people won't too. It'll kill most of the aftermarket. That article shocked me. Around hear nitrous oxide was outlawed on public roads because of drag racing ricers last summer, but no one has payed attention to any other mods here. I'm surprised SEMA doesn't care... |

so what they are saying is that they will insure a Corvair but not a lowered 68 GMC which now has a lower center of gravity & improved control arm geometry?
sounds like we all need to get SEMA to jump on this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This really sucks, I will have to do some research before I dive into a project that I may not be able to use.

it is also ok for them to deny insurance coverage if you update the brakes to better quality pads, change the Ujoints in the driveshaft to something other than factory, non-factory wheels/rims, changed gearing in any axle, changed hubs on front axles...
all kinds of s**t that if you are in an accident they can deny coverage due to non-OEM parts having the possiblity to cause the accident... i know this first hand, was in a major accident in Oct 04 with a new 01 Explorer Eddie Bauer (wife wanted it) and they (State Farm) gave us greif over the non-oem tires. We told them the truth, we bought it 5 days earlier and it had these tires on it, the paperwork in the glovebox said due to the tire recall with Explorers. yeah over friggin tires!

The guy may be an idiot Jeremy but some of what is said in the article is true. Some guys have contacted their insurance companies to find out they are not covered even tho they have bee paying. One guy here today just contacted Progessive and he was told he wasn't coverd because he had over 3 inches of lift. Better to talk to them than be sorry in the end.

yes, contact your insurance before any modifications and make aure you get IN WRITING what is covered and what would revoke your insurance. If you already have modifications contact your insurance and get IN WRITING a statement saying your modified truck is covered with current mods. If not start searching and make sure you keep a master list of current or planned mods to ensure coverage.

It boggles my mind that they would take our money and then not mention the fact that they wont cover any damage to the vehicle if wrecked. But then again they'll let anybody drive a 60 ft. motorhome without having any kind of extra license.

That would be our 2003 VW Passat and my 2005 Colorado the 97 suburban has power modifications, the K10 and 87 cherokee have suspension mods and the K10 is also nowhere near stock under the hood. So I really don't believe the insurance thing.

PEMCO in WA state
I planned to change from Progressive to PEMCO insurace anyway. So I called my agent a few days ago to ask about my planned mods, new rear springs and axles, disks up front, better shocks, power steering. Everything I have planed will result in better brakes and a safer driving truck with a little better top end.
He said that PEMCO will not insure any vehicle that has mods for more horsepower, lifting or lowering. [FYI Pemco insurance is only for Washington state]. But that was a mute point, it seems that while I was in the Army and deployed for a year to go kick some terrorist azz in the desert it left a 1 yr blank spot in my driving record. PEMCO requires that you have a full 3 yr driving history. My agent will ask the Co HQ for a waiver since I was in a combat zone and it's not like a had any choice in going overseas. Seems like everybody wants to give good lip service about the sacrifice Vets have made.... but if it violates the company policy then they will have to vote on it. A bit off subject I know but I just had to rant! |
