Waterneck Question
For the past couple years, Ive been using the chrome waterneck on my Burb, seems like they corrode and leak like it is now. Im gonna ditch the chome and go back to a regular stock waterneck, question is, how many use a gasket AND sealer?? Ive been told that I dont need sealer with the gasket.

I use sealer on the gasket and the bolt threads. I had one of those chrome ones that I eventually threw away also. I think mine was a cheap on though.

if you get a chrome with an O-ring type gasket it will stop all that. Had the same problem with mine,quick trip to napa and 30minutes of work and wala problem solved.Randy

I have tried two of the chrome ones with the O-ring with no luck. Tried using them with a gasket intstead of an O-ring also and trashed both in favor of the stock neck. I suspect if you spent some money for a good one you probably wouldn't have that problem though. I am a cheapskate.

Use a factory thermostat housing with AC/Delco gasket #10105135 (NO SEALANT) and you will never have any problems!

I have an aluminum one on the RED ROCKET with the o-ring it works great. I am going back to factory for the factory look when I get the factory valve covers finished. Then all the goodies Aluminum valve covers, Edelbrock intake, aluminum water neck etc go on my new 68 Burb. They are all getting a coating of factory orange paint POR 15 prior to installation to keep kinda sleeper look.

My chrome ones rotted thru also, like they say, "chrome don't get ya home". I went back to stock neck and I also use a gasket only, that's what they are for. That's like wearing a belt and suspenders at the same time, one or the other will do the job as long as the surfaces are flat without heavy pitting, no sealer is necessary.

I saw a stock looking metal one at jegs, but it had the o ring. Seems like a good idea to me.
However, if you service your cooling system regularly, this erosion won't happen. NAPA sells testing strips, and an in house product called NAPA KOOL. It helps with all these problems. |

My 2/cents worth; I've learned some expensive lessons in this department. So out of my pain maybe I can help somebody else; what ever you do don't use too much of the RTV silicone sealer, it works great with just enough to make a gasket. Or just use the plain old gasket by itself and make sure everything is nice and clean. If you use too much of any sealer it can get clogged up in your radiator and cause trouble. Personally I've switched to the #6003 from Lokar* it's the polished aluminum one with the O-ring and the adjustable neck that turns anywhere you need it !!! Also the best investment I've ever made in the cooling department was one of these new radiator caps with the diode on it that keeps the corosion out of the system, also I use the 7 year anti-freeze with a quart of the temperature reducer. My big blocks always got hot, but since I learned about this stuff I haven't had a minutes trouble !!! I wished all my gaskets were O-ring style so, didn't ever have to scrape another gasket as long as I live .

And when you say 7 year coolant, you aren't talkin the dex cool crap are you?
I would run goat pee before dex cool. I've chainged out too many heater cores gummed up from that stuff. |

Hey Junkie!!! Long time no chat. glad to see your still around. For what it's worth try one of Billet Specialties water necks ya get them polished or chromed. I have one on the ZZ4 and have yet to see it leak

This same subject came up last winter, back when everone was having problems with heaters that didn't heat up. Here was one of the solutions for warped necks & leaks. The part number for Chevys is the bottom one.
