Removing Bed/Cab

A while back I remember seeing some posts with pictures of a bed and cab being removed with an engine hoist. Haven't been able to locate them again. Does anyone have any of these? I remember something about cement blocks being needed in the cab to hold it straight?

I know the cab is front heavy, when I pulled mine (with a chainfall hanging from a tree limb) I had to put the strap all the way forward on the door windows and it still sagged a little to the front.

Removing a cab -Use the cab mount holes and rig a 4 way with 2 chains, -one at rear and one at front. 3/8" bolts front -5/16" at rear because the mount bolt cage nuts if they didn't rip loose are 3/8" -hence the 5/16" will pass through the nuts. (long obviously with BIG flat washers -grade 5 or "8" preferred! -Nothing LESS!!!) You'll have to play a bit to get it to come up reasonably straight. Have brake booster off and would be good for a/c stuff off front of firewall but not neccesary. I do it alone but would be good especially if its windy to have a helper. Roll window down and stick cherry picker in through it. You'll have to experiment with lengths a bit. "No Bent Gutters"!

here is another option

a 6x6 v'd out on each end to hold the strap from binding/slipping.
a knotch on each end of the 6x6 for the door lip to set in
a tractor
a strap

Maybe not what you are looking for, but a 4x4 through the cab, the hoist goes under the 4x and it will lift straight up. This is not real stable, and you will need to set it down as soon as you can. I lifted mine up, rolled the hoist back and set the cab on some blocks by myself. Had a couple of friends help me when it came to putting it back on.

Kind of hard to see with all the clutter. Engine hoist mast is inside cab lifting on the roof, it balances quite well. This was a junk cab. On my good one I used 2 2x12's screwed together run between the door openings, Also I had some 1 inch rubber pads where the wood touched the cab. Really simple, I had no problems, just take out all the extra weight. The bed is tricky, my hoist would not reach to the center of the bed.

I made this "jig for 2 purposes. one was I could jack up framew & bolt this to cab. then lower frame & roll cab off back of frame with rear tires removed. the other is for doing the cab repairs.
if needed I can take more detailed pics & get measurements.

Pretty much the same here except I had to use a cherry picker, no tractor here in the 'burbs

To reasonably healthy adult males can walk around with the cab if it stripped clean. And I have seen two guys carry a short bed around too, minus tailgate, actually it was yesterday. We carried the cab inside and set it on the cab dolly it fit perfect.

the base is 2x2. the lower part of the top is 1x1. the top of top is 1 1/4 square. then all bracing is 1x1. I used spare striker plates for the rear. I wish I had a spare set of hinges for the "A" pillars. I made the framework sit away from the body enough to clear the frame & also give working room to replace rockers etc.
my next addition is to install some rear wheel hubs from a Caravan so I can tow it around.

I have these pics of my setup
I did use concrete blocks to level out the weight
It has an adapter on top of the hoist
I posted specs and dimensions a while back
works nice and only takes 1 person to operate

Great pics! Anybody with a pic of the bed about to come off?
I guess you need to get the picker to the middle of the bed?

Solver -Did you make or buy the adapter you use on top of the cherry picker? I'd thought of something like that.

If you use the 4 cab mount holes and bolt chains through them it is easier to manipulate the angle of the cab when hoisting. just make sure that you use 2 chains - 1 for the front cab mount holes and one for the rear cab mount holes....then hook onto the chains further toward the front and use a screw driver of bolt to keep the chain from sliding through the hook on your hoist. - just a thought.

Solver's looks pretty good.
Wanted's looks kinda scare by the way he describes - but might not be.

the main problem with the hoist way of doing it is when you go to move it it is going to swing all over the place on you (especially if you use a chain or straps)
Solver's probably didn't move cause hes got it set up so there is no pivot point on the hoist (good engineering!!)
