What does it take to rebuild a rear-end
The Story:
My Brother gernaded the rear-end in the 1996 burben 10-bolt? The issue: The quote to fix is about 800 dollars The point: Rather fix it myself then see 800 dollars go byebye. The question: what do i need to know and are there any special tools for the job that must be on hand before. I've done bearing changes but never done a complete over haul of a differential. So any advise/education/thoughts/prayers would be great |

Ring and pinion setup is fairly critical. I've never done this...so I think I would not
attempt it unless I knew somebody who was experienced at doing this. Just a thought... If the chunk was "grenaded", isn't it possible that the axle shafts were damaged also. Why not go to a junk yard and see if you can get a complete rear axle (probably for a lot less than $800). Just a thought. Jim Mt Juliet |

As a mechanic I would say have a shop do it, I don't even do my own, I have my buddy that used to rebuild rears at a Chevy dealership do mine. I help but I let him run the pattern and set backlash, pinion preload, etc.
