Windshield Install- Put Top or Bottom in First if by Myself

Tried to put the windshield in last night following GMCPauls instructions......but it is tough by oneself......since this truck will never be waterproof, I used a ton of petroleum jelly, (not going to use gasket sealer).

Any trick beyond below if i'm doing it by myself? like top or bottom in first?

Can't imagine installing it solo. It REALLY helps to have 2 or 4 more hands pushing/holding. specially if you have the trim! I installed bottom first. I did not use vaseline (that sounds mean) I used silicone spray instead. Only other tip I have is to make sure the pinch seam is even all the way around the frame. I had 2 areas that had a raised seam. Gasket would not completely seal around those areas. Yup had to do it again.

yea, i've got the trim too.......so if the that is not totally seated prior to installing windshield, you are not gonna get it to seat later eh?

Trouble w/ silicone is that the rubber just absorbs it, but that might be good if one plans on using sealer.

I tried bottom 1st too, guess I just need the 4 hands........

thx

I was always taught that you installed the bottom gasket first, then worked your way up and around.

Hopefully you did wrap a good, heavy, braided thin line around the window at least twice to help you in the installation; that string is used to pull the inner gasket lip through the opening (instead of using screwdrivers).

BTW, I have always used at least 3 people when installing windshields in classic GM pickups; that window is heavy, and they can watch to see if the installation is going right.

Trim must be practicly perfect. No dents/bends. Instal trim to gasket. Then install gasket. Use 1" 3M masking tape to help hold the trim in place. Tape the trim from one side of the glass over the trim, over the gasket and back to the other side of the glass. Do this spaced every foot or so. Use no tools other than strong fingers and the rope. Once installed remove the tape. You can get it all out. For the rope you can use a surprisingly large diameter. A bit thicker than a lawnmower pull rope. good luck with it.
