I've been wondering about how to lock up a blazer. Mine has a double wall top and a tailgate like a pickup truck (with the handle outside). How do you lock the truck up? If I close the liftgate and lock it, I can still open the tailgate and crawl in. How is this supposed to work? Is there a difference in tailgates? Is there something wrong/missing from my top? Thanks!

You should have a piece that runs across the top of your tailgate that the hatch will sort of rest against when closed. This piece should prevent the tailgate from being opened. I can get a picture when I get home. I have the piece, but I haven't installed it on my tailgate yet.

you still shouldn't be able to open the tail gate with the rear hatch down. You're never going to get a first generation Blazer as secure as a new car. The best advice is to not keep anything valuable inside.

Theres this extra pice that bolted on to the top of the tailgate, it;s just a steel lip. I;m sure that added that for "secruity". Thiefs weren't such a problem back then but then the population wasn't as high either.

I believe those pieces are in the LMC catalog. I think it is called a rear lift-gate stop. It mounts on the top of the tailgate with about 8 screws.

Maybe but I'd bet it was there to seal the gate/hatch from exhaust fumes getting in.
The hatch gasket rest's on the metal strip completing the 'system' to create a seal.

vtblazer that would be a good guess but what about the bottom, when the gate is up there is a gap between the floor and tailgate. I might be wrong but the gate doesn't seal up either on the sides.

Yep, it does.
There was (when new/original) a stainless carpet strip that had rubber that sealed to the gate when closed, there were side strips that ran vertically up the sides of the gate with rubber also, all tied into/working with the hatch gasket to make what was considered a 'barrier' from the exhaust.

Beleive it or not it even works pretty good when everything is there and doing it's job of sealing.

Bet I have looked through that catalog a hundred times and never saw that

VT-Is the seal on your's one piece? My is getting a little worse for the wear after 33 years and it is one piece. It seems link the only one's I've seen in the catalogs run just along the bottom of the bed and not up the sides. Where did you get your seal?

They (the seals) are survivors from past blazers that didn't make it.

The two verticle side rubber's are separate from the bed floor strip.

I remember the side strips now but mine didn't have rubber in them if I recall. They got to be sitting in a box somewhere since I don't throw anything away. I have the holes in the floor of the bed and never knew what they were for.

Also my blazer when I got 20+ yrs ago had some kind of a seal that ran across the bottom when I got the blazer it was starting to fade then. When your 16yrs old you really don't care but that is designed to keep water out from between the taigate and rear cross seal. Most of the floors that rot out back their are rusting from the top side. Go to LMC catalog pg 15 Item # 25 Tailgate Bumper that is a knock off of the orgininal just saw it will have to get one

Nothing like the original but it will be better than not having anything there.

I've used that part, it's a glue on application.
Works okay as long as your able to get it to stay where it needs to be.

!! Unless i become rich and can pay $$$ for a nice room. I'm cheap, not having room service doesn't bother me and I can make my own bed. We payed 250 for 3 nights 2 beds. 125 a pop, not bad IMO.
