Dana 60 6 lug 3/4 ton? got pics - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I bought this axle years ago from a junk yard and they toldme it came from a old chevy dump truck??? I don't know if theres any truth to that or not. I know its a posi but whats weird is it has 6 lug axles and 3/4 ton u-joints. I had to buy a 3/4 ton yolk for my transfer case to make it work... is it possible this is factory or is it homemade? also theres a weird looking cylinder (solid steel) in the upper right of the pumpkin? what is that? thanks guys... heres the pics

Have no idea what the 'cylinder' is, but the axle is kinda rare and it is factory.
I have heard of them but never seen one.

What you got there friend is a dana 60 that used to have coils and now accepts leafs.

Looks like it was a home made conversion for the spring pads, kind of look like square tube..

I believe the 6 lug 60's were in the 1/2 ton GMC's and could very easily have had the pinion changed..

I don't think it came from an old chevy dump truck...

Yup, it is from a pre-'71 half ton with a big block.

Parts books will show it as a Spicer (Dana) 60-35.

And ya I need to get rid of the blocks but my truck never sees highway and get up to about a max of around 40MPH through town... rear leafs I'd take'em in a second safer and looks better.... Good thing I didn't take a picture of my front axle lift blocks lol

It is the panhard bar (track bar) mount for the coil spring rear suspension.

I'm not sure but I would think it's the number that Spicer used to identify it. It would be like the identification of the front axles on 4X4s; Model 44-5F, 44-HD5F, 44-8F, etc. GMC probably carried the number over to differentiate it from the standard Model 60. Check to see if 60-35 is cast into the center section, that would confirm my theory.

OK, I think I have an answer. The Spicer 60-35 is rated at 3500 lbs. so I'd say the 35 denotes the rated capacity of the axle. The regular 8-lug axle is rated at 5500 lbs.

My 67 GMC has that same axle wish it wa here in stead of at dads i would look to see if it has the cyclender on it or not I dont remember it thier.
