alternate brake master and booster?

I have no problems changing things on my 69 as it will not be a restoration.
Considering the stock power brake master/booster/bracket combo is so dang large has anyone converted something else on their truck? I would like to clean up things under the hood and get rid of that big eyesore. Surely there is something else smaller and as effecient as the stock ones. Not changing the disc/drum setup. Only wanting to downsize that brake/booster combo.

I got my set up from these guys. http://www.rightstuffdetailing.com/ The booster and brackets level out the master and do away with the stock linkage setup. The booster is directly in line with the brake pedal. They are pretty helpful over the phone. It's a good thing because their web site isn't that great. Chris

I've seen pictures of 30s and 40s hotrods where they put the booster and master cylinder under the floor of cab. Maybe somebody makes a kit like that for our trucks?

Didn't I read somewhere that the booster for the 3/4 and 1 tons are a dual diaphram type having a smaller outside diameter? Or is that one a hydroboost I'm thinking about?

I got it on GP from another board. If I remember right it was $300 and it is a new unit not rebuilt. I did not get because of the LS1 but it is nice not to have to worry about a big cam and not having enough vaccuum. I did get it because of it is the only thing proven to decrease stopping distances and with the addition of the Baers on the front and the disc on the rear hopefully it will stop as fast as it moves forward. And yes, I'm hoping it does help clean up the engine compartment.

Rez Engineering sells Corvette conversion set ups. Accordining to Rez Eng's 80-page catalog, the conversions come with "dual Corvette master cyl with 8.5" dual diaphragm booster, vacuum hoses, fire wall mount brackets, pedal linkage, and all mounting hardware. Disc brake kit includes proportioning valve." Rez sells these conversions for all year groupings from 60-72, drum or disc.

For 67-72s, Rez's 80 page catalog says for $295 drum/$389 disc. Rez Engineering has a reputation as a pioneer in brake & power steering conversions for 60-72 GM trucks. I've posted a few times to this effect. Not affiliated, Rez Eng has great expertise in this area and knows all the ins and outs and what frames/bodies need what parts, brackets, etc. I also admittingly want a small regional, 60-72 vendor to stay in business. Saves me shipping. Otherwise, Montana is close to nothing, vendor wise.

Some 60-72 vendors sell Rez Engineering steering gear frame brackets as shown in this article.

Price update. Talked to Rex Engineering late last week on my business. Mentioned the vette master cyl/booster conversion. Found out Rez now sells the vette conversion for 69s for $249 for drum apps. I forgot what the disc conversions now go for, but still much less than what I quoted above. HTH.

Good info on that link. A bit race oriented, but I like that.

I just saw an ad for Master Power Brakes in a mag who offer master cyl/booster kits for our trucks. Uses a 9" booster. Anybody used their product?

If you want to go super expensive, SSBC sells a bling bling aluminum master cyl for big bucks. I hope to use it one day for the fact that it will never rust. Definitely a splurge item.

No thanks Poet. No bling for me thank you. I just want to install a smaller, more compact booster. I have always thought the oem designed master/booster setup looked more like something that belonged on a big truck instead of a half ton.
I just saw a 69 in a mag using a 95 chevy unit flush mounted to the firewall. Looks a whole lot better to me. I'll investigate that one closer.

I have the 9" that masterpower brakes sells...I dont have it installed yet....but its defiently smaller than the stock set up. Should have it in the truck in the next month or so. I purchased the booster/prop valve (disc/drum) and master cylinder.

That was probably set-up like that so they could adjust brake bias, in car.

I don't think any kits are made for specific models. They are universal. That wouldn't be a problem, you just have to use check valves in the brake lines to prevent the brake fluid from draining back into the master cylinder reservoir. I know there was one truck on here that had done this at one time. Give Ed a call at Mothertruckers as he is familiar with these and has installed a few.
