Thumbs up

I like the looks of that also but you better get a sealer on it quick or she will turn brown on you! Excellant way to start a new project!

One thing to remember, the space inbetween the inner and outer roof....it'll need something in there or it'll rust like mad, same between the inner and outer back wall and way up under the dash.

If I dipped mine, all that'd come out of the acid would be a cab roof.

Looks great! However, I agree with chipflyer, get that baby sealed QUICK!! Surface rust will begin to form in 4 hours or less depending upon conditions.

A buddy of mine and I will be priming it in the next couple of weeks. It's setting in my garage so it will be fine until then.

It was dipped in a large tank of acid. It eats everything but just the good metal. All paint, rust and bondo are gone. It cost me about $850. I'm not real sure about the discoloring. I was surprised to see that too. It either was some sort of a chemical reaction or......?

There's really no way of getting in there. I figure that they were never coated or painted from the factory and I don't plan on driving this thing on anything other than sunny days. Sure it will rust some, but it wont rust as badly or as fast as it did from the factory. As long as outlasts me....
I do plan on getting primer in every nook and cranny I can possibly get to.

What they are trying to tell you is, "yes it started rusting the minute they took it out of the Vat". If you are going to wait to prime it you better get a good Sanitizer and clean it up first otherwise you are sealing in rust everywhere and are worse off than when you started. Also those inside places did have a type of coating on them from the Factory thats why they lasted this long. Is this Vat in the Portland area ?

I've read that only some factories would dip the lower 6-12 inches of the cab in a rust-proofing solution. Nowhere have I read anything about doing the whole cab. Yes, I had it done here in Portland.

I've alwasy been told that the metal was treated too, but never seen any documentation. I find it hard to believe that the thin sheet metal would last this long without anything on it. I sand blasted some parts, and placed them in the house (A/C on...it was summer) and it had some rust on it within 2 weeks. 6 months later when i finally got around to messin with the stuff, I had to sand blast it again.
Most likley, after dipping it and rinsing it all off, they hosed it down with an anti flash rust spray, most places do this, but it is a temparary coating. Even our parts washer at the shop (think HUGE dish washer) has anti flash rust stuff in the water.
The primer you use, make sure it is a sealer, otherwise, the primer will absorb water from the air and cause rust.
And, for the tight spots I mentioned earlier, you should be able to use a wand and get 99% of the metal covered. Spray undercoating in there and it'll act like insulation. and protect the metal.

Do you think I would still need to use a sealer given that it's going to be staying inside my garage? I of course will apply sealer when I'm finishing it off (before painting).

In highschool, i took auto body at the vocational school. We had a Monte Carlo SS in there at the end of my Jr year. The dvr 1/4 panel had been sanded town to bare metal and covered with quite a bit of Du Pont Primer. I can't remember what we used, but I am sure it was the cheaper stuff....plublic school funding doesn't allow for good paints.
When we came back to school the begining of our Sr year, the 1/4 panel was about 50% covered with rust. It had not started pitting yet, but it was getting heavy.
The car had stayed in the shop, and since there was no engine, I know no one took it out or anything.

Man, dipping in acid really brings everything to the light, I would be afraid to have a few the trucks I have done like that for fear they would fall apart, Great Job, looks like a lot of work ahead of you,and I would definitely get some kinda sealer on it dispite the fact its going to be in your garage, the northwest has rain, and that translates into humidity,so it doesnt have to get wet to get the patina thing going.Hate to see you have do double work.

silvertonguedevil, If you got it dipped at the place where I think you did ( off of or near vanvouver way) They did a sort of basic seal to the cab. as long as you keep the cab from the elements you will be fine. It's been a while sense I have seen the process done but I think it goes something like this dip the cab in a nitric (or is it HCl?) bath then nuteralizer, rinse and finaly a sealer.

Oh by the way the cab looks great!
