Tailgate Question

When I purchased my '70 CST/20 it was missing it's tailgate (had camper equipment in place of it). I am guess that since it has upper and lower trim with woodgrain on it, that the tailgate probably had the woodgrain trim as well?

My question is, can I buy just the cheap reproduction tailgate (the $179 kind)with no lettering, and then screw on the woodgrain trim later? Or will this not work because the repro tailgates have no holes for trim?

I thought the tailgate just had the aluminum trim. But to answer your question about the holes, I guess you could drill the holes and add the clips and trim pieces but I think it might look funny without the stamped letters in the center.

Well that's kind of my question. There are several kinds of tailgates, the kind with stamped letters but then the kind with a stripe of woodgrain across the gate with chrome "Chevrolet" letters. I would guess that a blank tailgate you could add this woodgrain stripe?

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. I don't see any vendors that sell tailgates like this. That's kind of what leads me to believe I can buy an empty/flat tailgate and screw on this trim? But I am not sure it can be done...

My truck came stock with the woodgrain panel on the tailgate. It only had the upper trim in line with the handle, and not the lower trim as seen in the above picture. This is the first time I've seen a tailgate with all three pieces. The only time I've seen the lower trim strip is when the tailgate doesn't have the woodgrain panel.

Your tailgate should have the woodgrain center with the 3 piece upper trim like pjmoreland explained. The trim, tailgate, and center panels are all sold seperately. If you are going to use the center woodgrain panel then a $179.95 plain tailgate will work for you. The woodgrain tailgate band will cover the area where the letters are. As for the holes for the trim, you will have to drill them yourself, because wether the new tailgate has letters or not, they do not come predrilled for the trim. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

I believe the woodgrain panel is held on by sheetmetal screws.
