A Putter's Exclusive - Stepside Rollpan

I have wanted a rollpan on my stepper for a long time. But the ones you buy from dealers such as Sir Michael's, AIM, etc.... never really appealed to me. They make the back of the truck sort'a...well, bulky looking. (If you have one of this type, I am not bashing it...I just don't care for them).

Well, I got an idea the other day. And as GMan69 can attest, once I get an idea, I won't let it go until it's built. So, I broke out my mig and went to work.
I actually built two of these. The first one didn't quite make the cut. The second one is much better. And I plan on making a few more in the coming weeks just for the practice.
I have contacted Sir Michael's about producing these for me, but have gotten no response. (If anyone knows where I can get these made 'professionally' please give me a holler.)

With that said...I will now post pictures.

This is how most peoples roll pans look on these trucks..... (kinda' bulky)
Notice that they simply attach and HANG under the tailgate

And here is how the Putter's Pan looks... (before and after shots)
It goes from fender to fender instead of attaching under the tailgate.

This one is by no means "finished". I have done zero bodywork to my truck, so when I get around to sanding and priming, I will make the final adjustments to it and get it to fit juuuust right.

This pan can be welded in place and smoothed out completely, but since I remove the fenders, I just bolted mine in place.

I do like yours much better Putter. That's the way a roll pan should look in my opinion. Looks almost factory made. Good work.

Yes sir. What a PITA, too. I need to buy a metal break and something to 'roll' it with. That is 100% hand made. Only machines involved were the cutting wheel on my grinder and my mig welder.

Nice work, even nicer result. Your rollpan idea is a quantum leap IMO. Please keep you brake lights working and watch out for tailgaters. Your tank looks somewhat exposed. Do you plan on relocating it further inside the framerails or designing a "rupture bladder" for it?

Eric,
Nice job! That is a much nicer compliment versus the typical option. It looks natural there. (Of course you know how much this is irritating me since my 71 is in the bodyshop right now!) By the way, that is one sweet looking tailgate on your stepper!! LOL Glad to see it is all coming together and looking awesome.

That`s just right. Not added-on looking.Just completes/connects the lines.I`m doing a`67 Gmc and I think a front roll pan would look real cool on it.It`s a stepside and I don`t see what I want for the rear out there. This is it.

Special-K - Just holler at me. I might be willing to build one for ya' if you don't go with a bumper.

Subtle - I finally got around to hanging that tailgate. I also did the hidden latches on it and ditched the chains. Worked out fine! Thanks.

You Da Man!!

That was truly impspired. That looks so friggin factory. I am going to be doing the same thing to my truck. The tool you want to use is a slip roller btw to get the intial curve right. It would make the job much easier.

I like that much better than any of the other stepside pans ive seen but imho the back of the steppers still look too busy. I dont like how the gate protrudes from the rear of the truck. It would look better if it sat flush with the fender wells and the roll pan. Then smooth in some taillights and youd have one hell of a clean ride. Of course looking at that red truck it would look pretty clean with your pan, chains removed and flushed out led tl's.

Good job as usual putter.

I already have the LEDs purchased for the pan, but haven't installed them yet. I wanted to run it on the truck for a day or so. I might pull it back off and install them this weekend, since it is a long weekend.

Special-K - I already have plans to build a few just for the heck of it, and each one looks and fits better then the previous one. If you are actually interested, just holler at me (I could use some spending money anyway).

I could, if I can find an '82 for a pattern. Let me ask around and see if any of the local folks have access to one like yours.

Wait, are you talking about two seperate trucks??? The 67-72 is a "YES", the '82 is "If I can find a pattern".

Eric,

Any chance you can post a shot of the rear taken from eye level. The first shot you have is nice. It is messing with my mind. For some reason, I am remembering your truck sitting lower than how it appears in that shot. I am trying to get an idea of how it looks at a little different angle.

VERY nice work. I have been shooting rear step rollpan setups for 2 years now looking for the perfect idea for my project. Thank you for doing this

I'd be interested in one if you deciede to bend up a few to sell.
