Remove Inside door handles
I can't figure out how to remove the inside door handles and window crank. I'm trying to take them off so that I can remove the outside handle and replace it.
I didn't see a set screw on them, so I'm not sure how to remove them.

there is a clip you have to pop off with a screwdriver or two on the inside of the door panel

They actually make a tool for this that reduces the chances of that clip shooting out across the yard. If you do it with a small screwdriver, be careful to CATCH the clip.
Here is a pic of the clip and the tool.....

Yeah push in on the door panel and peek until you see the two clip legs then just push off with a screwdriver. There is also a cheap tool for that too. (I keep thinking about buying one, been thinking about it for 25 years now))

WOW, those were quick responses. Thanks.
I guess I've got another trip to Advance Auto in my future.

They are a little tricky. Pictures say 1000 words. You have to get inbetween the handle and the door panel and remove the clip. I use a screwdriver, but they do make a special tool also.
hope this helps, Paul

For the last 15 years I've been using a screwdriver. I finally gave in and bought the tool. I'm glad I did! It is waaaaaay easier to use the tool than to use a screwdriver, especially on a 72 where the panels sit more tightly against the handles.

I've said it on the forum before and I'll say it again...
I had my 72 Chevelle for 10 or 15 years without that tool. Then I bought the tool. Not having that tool is like owning an American made vehicle and not owning any 1/2" or 9/16" wrenches or sockets.

When you put the handles back on put the clip on before you put the handle on. The handle will snap right on. I watched someone put the handle on and then try to put the clip back on and it was pretty funny!!

Well, I got the tool, removed the handles and was able to replace the outside handle. I haven't put everything back together yet. I need to replace some of the clips that hold the nuts in place.

the tool is definately a smart investment..........remember when you put the clips back on to face the open side towards the long axis of the handle/crank so you know which direction to remove next time.

take it off . theres already a built in recess to get the wire in behind the clip. forgive me paul for stealing your pic

Re: Remove Inside door handles
I had a friend bet me that he could take the interior handles off with nothing but a shop rag. I told him he was full of it.
He won the bet. |
