I was wondering how exactly a factory arm rest ataches to the door? Is there some sort of fastner that secures it? My truck didn't have factory armrests but I bought some 66 style armrests and I wondered how they 67-68 armrests were mounted from the factory.
Anyone have a picture?

2 screws hold them in place, I'm not sure but I think the screws go all the way through the door panels and secure into the door itself.

Edit: I was thinking of '72 panles, 67-68 bolt only to the metal door panels.

On my '71 the screws go clean through to the door itself, they too have the metal panels.

Pull the door panel, you'll see two square holes in the door. Trucks with arm rests had caged nuts in these holes with 1/4-20 threads. I did this on a 67 recently. I welded flange nuts in the holes and drilled corresponding holes in the door panels. I used repro 67 arm rests, the 66 screw holes may not line up.

You can also use nylon push in nuts. Did on mine and they worked great.

I was going to say the same as Sillyoldman, you can go to the parts store, get the push in nuts, the exact ones you'd use to mount a liscence plate, that's how mine are mounted, it works perfect.

My answer of "friction" would have been better as the first reply.

But I missed my window of opportunity. I've used the standard license plate square inserts before... most auto parts places should have them.

edit: Looks like 70 shorty beat me to that one as well.

I thought about that, Just didn't know if that was strong enough to support the abuse of an armrest, especially when you use them to pull the door shut and stuff.

Hey first gen, my armrest is actually only attached by the front screw, the back one acutally pulled all the way thought the armrest, but it's what I pull to close the door, so even with just one, its fine (at least for about 6 months that it's been that way).
