Gauge cluster spit polish

I have a factory tach dash and I was hoping to clean it up a bit. Can you guys answer a few questions I have?

What is the best way to clean the gauge face without ruining the graphics?

My tach hangs up around 3,000 sometimes like there is a rusty spot or something. Is this easy to clean up?

Last, who has used the 'Duranged Design' white face gauge kit? Do you like it?

Later,
Aaron

Sorry, one more thing. I have seen on a few trucks that the glove box is chromed with a flat black paint inside to match the gauge face plate. Is this custom or does someone sell these things?

Does anybody know anything about this glove box door? This is what I am looking for.

These are from 'chevydude's truck. I hope you don't mind me using your pictures.

Check out LMC trucks. They have both the chrome trim and the black insert.

Chevydude replied to me that he thought it came from Chevy duty so I checked there catalog as I had one and they do have it. It is chrome so I guess you would need to paint the inside black to match the cluster. I think it looks really good.

Did you ever get an answer to your tach question? If it was PM'd will you post it, because my tach is hanging up and I want to see if there is a way to fix it.

Believe that's 67-68 custom or custom deluxe trimmed glove box door. Not postive..but it is a 67-68 style..not sure on the trim level that came with for now..I could look it up though if you want exact details.

As far as the lense goes, its probally the outside that is fogged up, and if I know anything about those clusters, I think the numbers are on the inside. Just get some really fine polish (tooth whitening tooth paste would probally work) and buff it in there with a nice high speed buffer. Often times they come out looking like glass Just be careful when polishing it, you don't wanna sit in any one spot or you could burn, melt, or otherwise deform it a bit

A hanging up tach is often a sign of a tach about to fail... At least, thats how the 73-87 factory tachs act.

I had a glove box door very similar on a no optioned 67 that I parted. It was not chrome around the edges it was painted the same gray color as the edges of the gauge cluster. The center was a wrinkle style paint, which was similar to the semi rough plastic finish on the center of the gauge cluster as well. The emblem was used on 67 and 68 models. I know I let the glove box door go with the truck, because that was in the late 80's when there were tons of these trucks getting parted and yes I feel like this now

Just to add to the confusion, I belive that the wrinkle finish flat black paint on the center is called "camera finish", much like the body of a camera.
The light colored surround on the 67 and 68 is not chrome, but silver paint.

I have not gotten a real answer on the tach issue. I guess I will need to do a little investigating when I remove the cluster.

Here's a couple pics of my glove box door in the GMC, I just bead blasted the center of a chrome glove lid and then textured it black, I think it really balances out the dash.

That is a interesting approach, BLAZERMAN. Adds to the symmetry.

How did you protect the chrome around the edge? How did the transistion between the chrome and the bead blasted area come out in terms of smoothness and preventing the chrome from lifting or pealing?

I wouldn't use the durange gauges for nothing! they may look good and be easy to use but before he was banned from this site he was real nasty respomding question about his "kits" on his last posts, can't remember exactly but it has something to do with the quality on them when he first started selling them, might want to do more research more on this, I believe board member XXL bought one of his kitswhen he first stared selling them.

Just my $.02

Blazerman - That dash looks great. Question, I would think you could just paint the center section of a chrome glovebox rather than blast it first, am I wrong?

i dont think the paint would stick to the chrome, so you'd probably want it bare metal instead

I personally have purchased over 30 sets of the overlays from Ryan @ durange and they have been super helpful willing to work with me on my needs and always follow through on what he's said. I wasn't a member here when the this was going on and didn't know that he had a problem here, but my .02 is that he is a stand up guy with a good product and from my experience with him great customer service Randy
