I can't get timing set

Trying to find best timing for my 283. Was set at 6 initial with vac adv unhooked. I have it at 15 initial and about 40 total @3200 and still no ping at any rpm even if I lug it. Can I go more if it's not pinging ? I checked balancer and it has a timing mark on inner and outer ring and it has not slipped. I've timed many motors before and they always pinged if you went too far, why won't it ping and what should I do ?

When we used to race Sprint cars we used 42 - 48 total depending on the cam and or track conditions. 48 was pushing it for longevity.

Talking

I recently removed the heads from a 307 that were from a 350 engine. The heads had 76 cc chambers and you could not make the engine ping by advancing the timing. I am not sure if you have the same situation but it is a thought.

Well I went and bought a fancy digtal timing light with advance feature and a tach built into make this easier. It was $85 but wife says Father's day is coming up so that will be my present LOL, can't beat that !!! I did finially get it to ping but I had to set the intial timing to 30 degrees, just kept turning it by hand out on the road. It actually ran ok, When I got back home, whew 30 degs thats way too mucking futch. Anyway, got it set now 12 initial, with 28 in the distributor, for 40 total all in by 3200 rpm. Add 18 deg for the vac can, hooked up full vacumn port(only one on 2bbl) and she runs like a champ for and old motor. Have about 28 degrees at 2000 which should be cruise rpm plus the vac can. Hope this info might help someone else...
