Olds 307 into an 89?
Hey!
As some of you may know, I blew the 305 in my 89 up, so I am looking into other options. I've got a Delta 88 with an Olds 307, and an overdrive tranny (I think it is a 200r4) What all would it take to physically bolt it into the 89? Just new engine mounts? What about the exhaust, will the 307 have similar manifold angles / positions as the Chevy? Also, would the coolant drain plugs be the same size as a chevy engine for the knock sensor? Also, does anyone know if a TBI will bolt to any standard 2 barrel intake? If I did go this way, I would want to bolt the TBI ontop of the 307. Thanks! Russell

I don't think any olds motor was ever avalible in a 88+ chevy truck unless they came with a 350 deisel, so no motor mounts are readily made.

you could do the TBI swap with a 454 TBI adapter from a 90+ truck. the only thing i would worry about would be the programming in the PCM. an Olds 307 is very different from a 305, and cam profiles would be very different as well. it COULD be done, but worth it? i dont see it being as cost effective as locating another 305 longblock and putting it in.
as for the mounts, look for a pre-82 diesel truck, these would have the 5.7 that Tom mentioned. might be able to make them work. what does the car have on it for induction now? carb? why not toss a good rebuilt QJet on top of it and call it good. |

I can get a 2 barrel intake for it -- I personally don't think that the EFI will mind too terribly much. I am sure the cam profiles are probally a bit different, but the overall fuel consumption rate should be fairly similar. So long as the engine is getting good vaccum, the TBI should not even notice the difference, and just set the fuel mixture according to the 02 sensor.
Right now the 307 has a feedback q-jet on it. Doesn't start very good, and stumbles a bit on startup - which is why I want to go over to the TBI. I simply don't know enought about carbs. Considering my past attempts at fixing em, I don't think it is worth my time and effort, lol.

You could make your own engine mounts easy enough....
Depending on what tranny you have behind the 305, you may have to get a different driveshaft for the 200r4.

sounds good Tom -- I just heard somewhere that many BOP engines had 200r4s in them.
If it is a 700r4, then the only thing I'll have to do is rig up some exhaust and bolt it in. I think I'll just run the carb on it. The carb starts good enough. If I find a 2 barrel 307 intake, I'll try the TBI on and see how it works.

Well, I just got offered a good 350 for 85 bucks, so I think I'll take it and put a much more desirable engine in, not to mention easier to install too, lol

Sounds alot better then using somthing with less power then a 305 of course if it is a 200R4 that peice might be of some value.
