Question about towing
i have a 1983 chevy, 4x4 . the weight of the truck is around 4500 LBS. I have a mping trailer that weights 4950 LBS ! I was wondering if the truck would tow the trailer or if i should be looking for a larger truck
any help would be great Thanks Landon

The weight of the truck has little to do with the tow rating. With the proper hitch set-up, and towing equipment, your truck should do fine.

Along with towing package that aesj2 eluded to, I believe the weight of the trailer and the truck are combined to determine whether or not they exceed the GVWR of the truck. (Also, the rear GAWR should not be exceeded.) A standard K20 has a GVWR of 6,600 lbs (RR GAWR of 3,880 lbs). A K20 with a RPO of C6P has a greater GVWR at 8,600 lbs (RR GAWR of 6,000 lbs). (The certification label on the door/glove box door should have the GVWR of your truck.) Unfortunately, your total weight exceeds these ratings. But, we know how 'we' sometimes push these trucks.

I have hauled trucks and cars on car haulers with a 1/2 ton Chevy many times with no problems. You sure would not want to use a bumper hitch. You have to have a class 4 receiver hitch and brakes on the trailer w/brake control in your truck.

I agree with 86SWB, it not a matter of weight but the proper equiptment to distribute the weight and still maintain control is required. It's not a fNord it aint going to break!
