Choice of replacement carbs
I'm thinking about replacing the quadrajet on my '86 SWB. It has already been rebuilt once but it needs it again. It has been a PITA ever since I got the truck, and I haven't found anybody who can get it adjusted correctly. I'm thinking of either going with a 650 Edelbrock or something similar in the Holly line. I would like to hear your preferences, pro or con, on each carb. BTW, the truck has a 350 CID & TH350 trans. Thanks for your time.

NO EDELBROCK, NO EDELBROCK, lol every vehicle ive ever put those on loses everything it ever had, ecspecialy the performer carb IMO they suck the only thing that they make good is their intakes, id go holley all the way the biggest difference is edelbrock goes more for looks then performance, like u have to take the whole damn carb apart to adjust the float with the holleys stick a pen in the side and your done, id go holley all the way man like a 650 or sumthin
my 2 cents cb

I like the edelbrocks, I have the 650 w/ elec. choke on my '86 & it never gave me trouble last winter (below 0 degree starts everytime) & runs good. I've never had to adjust the floats, just the screw on the front, simple. I'm an edelbrock believer.

here in the south with the humidity, anything but an edelbrock sucks... unless you want to adjust it every other day.
I put a Edelbrock 600cfm (1406) on my 76 and didnt even need to adjust it to start it the first time. Holleys need adjustment every week or so here in the muggy south and the other just cant handle the humidity as well. Your best bet is Edelbrock here in the Southeast

There are more advantages to a Holley as far as tuning and they tend to be more smoother in operation. Of course you need to know how to tune them right. I dont care for Edelcraps but they are fine if you dont know much about carbs and want somthing to work easy although I never had a problem making a Holley go.
You might also look into some replacment Q-jets, I have a Holley reman Q-Jet sitting on my 383, cost $190 form a local parts store, $40 less then one of thier junk rebuilt Q-jets eveyone takes back in a week. I just had to convert it from a heat to an electric choke.

Qjets are good
Unless you are running a race car, you are much better off with the Qjet than the Holley or the 1406.
Edelbrock's 1904 Qjet is designed by the same engineers that designed the Qjet that was placed on you truck from the factory. The Qjet provides better all around performance and does not require a lot of tuning, just tune the idle mixture and you are done. The Qjet will normally provide both good gas mileage and good performance. You can tune the carb for more power, it just takes more knowledge and time. There are several web sites with a lot of information on how to tune the 1904 for performance. You can not tune a worn out carb, and they do have wear issues that can only be addressed by remanufacturing. Rebuilding a worn out carb will not gain you anything. If your carb is the orginal, I would highly recommend a new edelbrock 1904 as a replacement. This is just my opinion.
