what is it?

what is preloading the lifters, and how do you do it?

If you are talking standard hydraulic tappet lifters, it bascially is filling the lifters up with oil before you install them into your engine so the engine achieves full oil pressure as quick as possible when you start it up for break in.

In all reality, it really isn't nessessary, but it is worth the extra time as far as I am concerned. To preload them, simply put them into some fresh, clean oil, and let them fill up with oil. I just stuck mine into a clean container full of oil, and let them sit there overnight (oil is pretty thick, so the air may need some time to work its way out). After that, use the same oil to lubricate the lifter bores, and slide the lifter (with break in fluid on the bottom and sides) into their bores.

or it could mean setting the valve lash... preload is usually a term for how much tension is put on a bearing.. in this case, how much tension is put onto the lifter after zero lash (1/2 turn after zero lash outta be good)

just a thought...

but i preset mine with about a 1/4 turn with the intake off so i can see whats going on hand turning it several times

what if you pre-oiled the oil pump with the oil pump primer, would that do the same thing
