I can hear (and feel) the A/C compressor kicking on and off when the A/C is runnin on my '85 GMC.

Anybody know what causes this?

You are probably a little low on freon. When the low side gets below the pressure switch cut-off, the system will shut down. It's short cycling.

How often? It should cycle on and off every few minutes, just not every 4 seconds.

That's correct. This is a built in safety feature if your AC system is low on freon. Get it charged up and you should be good to go.

Earl, It cycles more like every 5-10 seconds. I'll get her charged. Sounds like thats probably the problem.
