Audio Systems

I am looking to put in a audio system in my 78 1/2 ton to replace the single speaker and the AM radio/8-track, the latter being something I rigged up. The problem is, considering the truck came with the single speaker in the center. It is not really built for holding a nicer stereo system. I am just wondering where some of ya'll have put speakers in your trucks, assuming you have. So that I can get some ideas for where to put mine, because one speaker and an 8-track just ain't cuttin it anymore.
Thanks in advance

Some people have a large desire for the 6x9 brackets behind the seats, my 85 originaly had 4x10's in the corners behind the seats and 3 1/2's in the dash. There were some pioneer 3 ways in boxes behind the seats when I bought the truck, and I am still using them now cause they actually sound pretty good.

Another thing to do is put them in the lower door panels which I have seen done a lot.
Crutchfield also sells replacement kick panels that hold what I think are 6"s, but they are a hefty price for what it is.

The possibilities are endless and I am sure more people will respond to your question with some good info.

I forget where I saw it, but I believe some company makes kick panels that hold some speakers like modern cars.

Here's a before and after shot of what I'm talking about... I just scrounged this pic up of the net so I don't know if they make it for 73-87 Chevy's.

There's plenty of aftermarket stuff out there, just search around a lil. You might want to check out www.streetsourcemag.com or www.cardomain.com, run a search for 73-87 Chevy's and start looking at their stereo's, you might see something you like.

Ok I will look into the kick panels, and I have thought about putting 6X9s in the corners behind the seats as well. Thanks for the input.

I know that people do that, I don't believe it to be too uncommon, but I always wondered what the sound quality was like... Can't be too good being muffled out behind the seats. I guess my point is you should keep you mid's and high's in front of you, and build/buy a nice box for subs behind you since that's omnidirectional and it doesn't matter.

In my buddy's '88 Camaro there were two speakers mounted on top of the dash, with plenty of room for some deep speakers. I would assume that these trucks have just as much room. If you've got a cracked beaten up dash just whack some holes in it and mount them there. ::full of idea's::

speaker box

I built this speaker box for my truck. Cost 20.00

Behind each seat is a 8" sub pushing all this is a 500 watt amp. Sounds pretty good. I put 6X9's 1 in each door, more than enough for my 75 stepper

If you had any shots of the 6X9s in the doors that would be sweet to see how you did that. As for the sub box i had planned on making one for behind the seat. In fact I have some plans drawn out already for that.

I am using two seperate boxes for 12"s that were behind my bench seat, now one is between the backs of my seats, and the other laying on the floor in between them. I am interested in a setup like this http://www.decware.com/tbk10.htm or a center console incorporating the two subwoofers.

Got any pictures of the 4 12's in that box, I assume it is sealed. Can you get a decent amount of cubic feet with that setup? The thought of doing that crossed my mind. If I had 4, I could be down to 2 ohms per channel and be putting out more constant than with my 2 subs at 4 ohms per cahnnel.

[QUOTE=bodydropped] 4 12's behind the seat ]

Did you have to cut the back of the cab out and run your box into the bed for them? If you didn't then what kind of box do you have and how many Cubic feet is it, is it ported or sealed, how do you keep them from gettin to hot behind the seat period, what kind of amps are you running and where did you mount them, what kind of Subs are they, how many watts and ohms are they, and do you have them wired for 2 or 4 ohms? Lots of questions sorry, lol, but I'd love to get four 12s behind the seat, I got 2 Memphis M3s and they keep gettin hot along with the amps. Thanks. Again sorry for all the questions.

I have 2 6x9s behing the seat and am planning to hook up a 12" Sub behind the seat too. I like the idea of the 6x9s in the door.

I'm not a huge fan of cutting the doors IMO it looks cheap. (No flames please it's my opinion do what you like it's your ride)

I have two MTX TS82 boxes behind the seat, two Audio Junk enclosures on the sides, a Pioneer 4x6 in the factory spot and a MTX tweeter hidden in an ac duct. Sounds good dident cost alot I just wish I would have gotten a different amp Sony sucks.

Sorry pics kinda big even with camera set to lowest res.
