Wtb: Automatic Column W/ Overdrive

I want a rebuilt automatic column for my 67 gmc swb. It needs to be setup for a overdrive trans (700r4). I currently have a lokar floor shifter (2 months old, but was not installed by me, the previous owner put it in) and would like to put it back original. let me know

you could use a 3 speed auto column but you would not be able to manually shift it in to first gear

Here tell you can use a tilt which doesn't have the detent stuff on the bottom. You rely on the transmission detents. You can buy the 700R4 indicator from board venders.

My tilt does not have the detents at the bottom, but it DOES have the detents inside it. The shift lever has a tab on it. I tested it before I installed it and it stopped at each position.

Ignition switch is on the column for the 82/3 & up vans... He wants to retain the original appearance...

Is your column steel(painted),chrome,Aluminum,or Polished aluminum?I would be interested in that package for a custom.

OD Tilt

I modified my tilt by removing the nonOD gate(thats what I call it) that has the detents and installed a OD gate from a GM column with the OD detents. Use the shift lever from the OD column and you are home free. I usually look for late 70/early 80 full size Buick/Pontiac/Chevrolet cars as they have a more normal looking shift lever - The vans and Caddys have wierd bends in the lever.

This requires you to dismantle the column to get to the detent gate - almost completely. I also notched the outer housing to allow the shift arm to move a little bit further.

I am concerned about the pointer traveling beyond the indicator edges and snapping off but that happens with non modified columns unless your linkage is just right.

PM me if you are interested in more details - Bob

Non-Tilt???

Hart Rob - I don't know for sure but the tilt columns have a detent gate while the non-tilt have the detent at the end of the column. You could probably grind the stop away to get more movement but I am not positive.

Anybody else have any thoughts?

it is a lokar floor shift automatic shifter with a chrome shaft and a brushed aluminum shift knob on it. it looks almost identical to a manual shifter. It was bought for about $200 or so, so I will let it go for less when I find my stock shifter

Are you going to adapt an original column since you can`t buy one?Did you check Ididit to see if they make them for O/D?I bet they do.
