Tow-proofing a Blazer?
Finally went topless this morning for the first time (I've had the Blazer for a little over a year). Idiot PO used double-sided tape instead of weatherstripping, but that's a different story.
MY QUESTION: Let's say I'm parked in a public place somewhere with the top off. What's to keep someone from coming along, throwing my Blazer in neutral, hooking a chain to the front tow hooks and taking it away? |

Same thing that would stop someone from taking one with a top on....Not much!

They would probably hot wire it first - less effort and faster than towing.

Yup, these things are easy to get into, w/ or w/o the top on, the best
advice I can give you is to not drive it, since that ain't gonna happen, i reccomend a good insurance carrier who deals in replacement value.

a little off the subject but i've had an idea in my mind for a while now... what about an alarm system that activates a solenoid that opens a can of pepper spray in the cab? what do you guys think? the can sprays all into the cab and nobody will be able to stay in there long enough to hotwire it at least.

In the United Socialist Soviet Republic of California, I would not be suprized to get prosecuted for protecting your own property.

Hey masterfcraftpk, You got the name right, United Socialist Soviet Republic of California, but watch out, because its spreding to the rest of the Republic like fire. I'd say in 20 or 30 years, might need to move to Russia for some freedom.

"Let not your heart be troubled." I lived in Cali a lifetime ago, and I see it getting better in many ways.

At least in California we have more good weather to take the top off which you must admit does make it somewhat easier for the car thiefs.

What about this?
Fab a bracket so that when you set the parking brake, it can't be released without a key. Could be a very simple bracket and a padlock. That would keep the vehicle from rolling at least. Bluegoose |

Take off your tow hooks and give them to me that way it is too much work to hook a chain up since all thieves are lazy. Or put a note on it that says "Please steal me" it will freak them out and they wont do it.

i have seen trucks with the club and their wheels turned all one way on a towtruck. they used those tire skates under the tire to move the truck. if a theif really wants to take your ride they will find a way. but on another note, that pepper spray idea would be good but what if you accidentally set it off.

You could get one of those removable steering wheels or, always park next to an expensive european convertable!

I don't know how he did it, but one time I saw this guy's Landcruiser or -Rover(?) with the top off. He had a motion sensing detector on the alarm circuit.

There are commercially available alarms that use a motion detection device. I had one on a car that could even be setup to tell people they were walking too close to the vehicle.
I think it cost me about $800.00. Now I wish I had pulled off when I sold the car.

I had a dual zone proximity alarm in a 5.0 drop top mustang. It would sense when someone was standing close to the vehicle and give a warning beep. If you broke the perimiter of the interior, the beep would escalate for 2 seconds an then the alarm would go off. It was kind of cool. I actually forgot about that until you guys mentioned it.

Grant makes a removable steering wheel kit about $100 bone's here locally, seems like that and the alarm and you would have a pretty good chance that it will stay where it is parked... Just remember if they want it bad enough they will get it..
