I had my hood and one bedside soda blasted a couple of months ago. It removes all of the paint, but does not remove any metal, or rust, and won't hurt glass or chrome. After the metal has been blasted, it won't rust easily.(unless you sand it). My bedside is still bare, and hasn't rusted even though it got rained on once. The soda is very corrosive, so you want to make sure that it is cleaned good after blasting, but it saves alot of work, especially if you have several layers of paint, like I did.

Cool

What is a good supplier and tools needed to do this process for the backyard guy without a shop?
I have searched for info on this online but typically they are service sites that sell their services.
I would like to do this process myself; and maybe possibly do it on a small scale for those of us in the hobby!
thoughts............

John, I am listening. Do you have any of the equipment? What happens to a side moulding if you were to soda blast it? Tim

it's not a job suited for a backyard engineer/ you need a VERY large compressor/ a breating apperatuce and suit/ outside hope you have a large property should be at least 100yards away from neighbors and buildings and animals and it will kill the grass

also soda blasting is rapidly falling out of favor with resto shops due to the fact that the paint jobs they did 3-4years ago are starting to fail /also most paint manufactures won't guarantee thier paint on parts that have been soda blasted

Is soda blasting the same as aluminum oxide blasting? I had a cab blasted with that from board member jaquesdean in Sneed AL.

Aluminum oxide is different...just another abrasive material that is chemically inert, unlike soda. You are fine as long as you protect it from rust.

Aluminum oxide is the same material found on most common sandpaper. Basically a mineral like sand. Soda blasting is more like salt. Fine in the dry form but when moisture reaches it, look out. I know a local guy that had a bed blasted and 6 months later with the humidity, the double layers (bedsides to inner sides) looked like an old battery post. All clumped with white crust.

There is also "media" blasting. These are small plastic balls/beads. Very popular a couple years ago.
I looked at "wallnut shell" blasting on a truck last week. It sure looked good and left a slight etch that should help the primer adhere.
Any comments/problems with either of these.
I have been using sandblasting for years. It removes all the rust & bondo and leaves an excellent surface that PPG recommends for their epoxy primer. You do have to remove all glass, trim etc. It is good for individual parts & stripped trucks.
