2.5" exhaust manifold

attached is a pic of a 2.5" outlet exhaust manifold. As you can see there is a bracket cast into the manifold. What would it take to cut off and grind the casting to something similar as the other end. Not perfect though close. A little paint, install 'em, and never worry about a header leak again. This manifold is $79+. The LH sells for $94+ and I don't have an idea why.

I cut them off of the manifolds on my GMC (vette ramhorns) and cut one bracket off of the driver side manifold of my chevy, I used a 4.5" cut off wheel.

Keep in mind these are vett. manifolds and they drop straite down. The trucks have a slight kick back to help avoid mounts and such. That being said they will work and work well. I had some on my 327 in my 71, it was a bit harder for the exhaust guy to do his job but he did it. Now I just had a set of custom headers done for my LT1 from sandersons and they are just shy of 3".

That's the mount bracket for the ac compressor and I have one on my 74 vette. It seems like someone out there would need one and would trade for yours.

Sandersons are very good headers and Mr. Sanderson is a vry good person. At the Oakland Roadster show, I think 1998, he gave me copper collector gaskets and a metal plate to cure the collector to exhaust tubing leakage. It worked and worked well. He did not have to do this and I was not expecting him to do anything. Good man!

I cut that piece off for a 62 Impala I had years back, and the only thing is that where you cut, it will be smooth and not a rough surface as the rest of the manifold

The manifolds on my GMC were new castings for a 63 vette 327, left and right. Got them from GM parts direct for $86 each. I don't know of any center dump ramhorns w/ 2.5" collector that does not have the brackets for alt/AC.

I cut mine off, used a file to shape, used a right angle die grinder with Scotch-Brite pads to smooth up the rest a little and then sand blasted with coarse sand to evenly matte the finish. Wiped with lacquer thinner and finished with Eastwoods manifold Cast Grey coating. They look pretty sharp.

Eastwood also sells a manifold smoothing kit that has some abrasive rolls to smooth out the whole manifold if you don't mind a bit of a custom look.

They sound very nice. How many hours do you have in them? Any pics?

We had the same car, 62 Impala SS. I bought a 300 HP 327 with the 2.5 exhaust manifolds from the factory. Before I could build it I got an offer I could not refuse and sold all of it. Sold the SS earlier this year.

You can also put the manifold on the opposite bank after you do this so the ground off part is facing towards the fire wall and its even less noticable.
On some installations not all you may have to remove a little material from the motor mount stands.

Left side of the pic. Or was it the right?
Seriously it was the left, front side of the engine.
This is the motor for my truck so I went with the 2.5" and several other upgrades. You can see the rollor rockers. Just stamped steel version but will help some. The rest of the mods are internal.

Here are some pictures of the engine in my "Garden Truck". I have the 2 1/2" Corvette manifolds on it. My truck is a 4X4 also. I ground the bosses off of both sides. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

You guys are good. Thanks for the pics.

Wes you need to offer these for the less talented or too busy customer. How did you get the surface to look the same (rough)?

I cut the bosses off with my cut off wheel and then ground them with my 4 1/2" grinder. I could grind a pair off but would have to charge about $50.00 because I have a good 1 1/2 hours into them. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Now I want to hit both of you up for closeup pictures so I can see what I should achieve.

Wes, you and GMCPaul really make a 67-72 owner feel inferior. And Paul doesn't list all of his trucks. If both of you lived closer together that would be a truck show in itself.

If you look at the bottom left picture, that is the end of the manifold. Just remember when cutting the boss off of it, leave lots of room to grind and smooth. You will see it realy isn't that bad. Just don't remove too much material and go easy on it. You can alway remove a little more material, but you can't put any back!!!
I don't try to make anyone feel inferior, and I'm sorry if I do. I try to educate you with my experience. If you love these trucks as much as I do, you will get there soon! WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com
