I have new full length carpet for my '68. The gas tank has the thick tar paper shims under it. I would like to sit the tank on the carpet and eliminate the shims, but that will also space the tank mounting bolts away from the cab. Should I trim the carpet, so the tank sits on the carpet on bottom, but cut front side so tank can bolt straight to bab without carpet in between ? There is not much room between cab and tank and don't want tank to hit seat or does 1/4 inch matter ?

I'd notch the carpet. Too much work taking the tank loose just for what you're suggesting.

carpet retaining moisture will cause rust on the tank bottom
