Is it worth the price. C-10 25k mile original?
Hi All,
Any thoughts on the following vehicle would be greatly appreciated. It is an original '68 C-10 LWB with less than 25k miles. Appears to be in excellent original condition. At the same time, it does not have many of the extras which add value to these vehicles such as A/C. Is $12k reasonable, ridiculous, etc. http://www.thecharlesmotorcompany.com/chevy1968.html Thanks. It looks like a preserved original.. it's probably priced about right.

I agree with meathead, you probably cant restore one for that. Try giving them a lower offer you may be able to get it for 10K. Real nice truck though. Good Luck & let us know how it turns out.

Don't take this the wrong way but I believe it has had a repaint at some point. The picture below sows some runs in the paint, which isn't usual for a factory paint job. Others may disagrre with my thinking, so don't let me change your mind.
It's still a beautiful truck and better than either of mine! Good luck, Rg

I agree with Raggedjim, theres no way thats original paint. The undercarriage of the truck is as nasty as my trucks. Everything on that truck looks good, but the look of the undercarriage tells me that somethings not right. A truck with only 25k should look better than that underneath. I'd bet money that its fresh paint. If the paint in the door jamb looks that nice, the lock mechanism should be just as nice. Something is fishy.

Hmm, now you guys really have me confused. My head is spinning.
I guess the million dollar question is, "what parts if any have been repainted and why?" I have asked the seller to confirm that the runs noted are indeed either there or are just flaws in the photo. He said he did not notice previously but will check it out and reply. He is probably telling the truth in that regard as I am sure he would not have posted that photo if runs were evident. He maintains that this is a vehicle which the buyer will not be in any way dissapointed with and that it is in outstanding original shape. If that area was resprayed the next puzzle is why. This does not seem like an area which you would respray if you were just fixing up a scratch or a ding on the outer door? At the same time, if entire body were repainted it would seem there should be other signs of that having been done? Could this indeed be a factory flaw? Any other thoughts on condition of chasis? Yes, I see surface rust but is that just normal after almost 40 years even with only 25k miles? Not offering an opinion, just looking for expertise of others. Finally, if you look at the photo under the hood I see numbers or something written along the top of the firewall, just above what looks like some weather stripping. Any idea what that is? Thanks Again, Mike Last edited by amphicar770; 07-13-2005 at 06:22 PM. |

Those are factory build numbers, they should be on any original underhood painted truck as this one is supposed to be.

Are there even companies that will finance, because of the year I mean. It looks nice But I think the color is Ugly. But other than that......

THere are companies that will finance based solely on your credit rating and don't care the year of the car.
BUT This is truck has most definitely been repainted. Notice they said no rust or collision repairs, they never said no paintwork. Looking at the pic of the driver's door handle, I can't help but wonder why their aren't any scratches from fingernails etc. Add that to the runs in the door jam And the fact that the bed just looks too perfect I'd be asking if it had been repainted, because what exactly does "original" mean to them? If it hasn't been repainted it would be 32+ year old paint, and it would show it's age no matter how the truck was stored. Nice looking truck (but the color), but something sounds fishy to me. Thats my thoughts anyway

I have (and had) several nice original paint trucks and they all have had some paint runs on them somewhere. Remember, these were just trucks, not show trucks. But, I sure would check it out close before giving big money for it. Just my 2 cents worth.

I would say imo that it is a repaint (whole truck) but let's not forget that these trucks were painted by ppl and not a robot, so a run could be possible, unlikely but possible, especially in the area as I would think the factory would have noticed it and taken steps to reduce, or remove them all together. Just my .02 Randy

Look under the ignition switch where the key chain would rub against the dash to see how much if any scratches there are, if there are none it has defenitely been painted. Hard for me tell see the runs in the paint but my 67 had some runs on the firewall from the original paint. The bed looks too clean for original paint, even if it wasn't used it should be faded some. Good Luck

and the incorrectly painted adjusting arm for the alternator. I am sure there are many more errors to be found.

The biggest thing that I notice is, is the rear view mirror is clued to the window. That only came out in 72, correct? So right there you know its not 100% ORIGINAL.
I WOULDN'T SPEND THE MONEY, b/c who knows what else could be overlooked. I'd rather pay more money for something that is Actually original, rather then get a deal on something that looks original but isn't |

Here is response from seller. I am still on the fence on this one.
========================================================== This is an exceptionally nice truck and it is our opinion, based on the conversations we had with the family member (from whom we purchased the truck) of the original owner, that the mileage is accurate and the truck has been pampered its entire life by the family. I recall they said the owner hauled eggs in the bed and had it covered to prevent scratches. We have been all over this truck and it looks to us that it is original paint. Possibly the passenger door has been repainted. The undercarriage reflects what you would expect to see in a low mileage vehicle that is 37 years old. These trucks just rust out in a major way in Missouri and it is not conceivable to us that the vehicle is not what we believe it to be. I also looked at some pictures I have of the ID plate area and I see the runs. But, notice how clean the margins are on the tags. If this was ever repainted, it was an exceptional job. Overall this paint is in excellent condition. The lock mechanism is a wear area where you expect to see. This truck is 37 years old and it is not possible for anyone to be 100% certain about everything that may have been done to it or to draw any conclusions from a few runs in paint. We have seen plenty of factory defects in paint, trim, interiors and body on older cars. The Old Car Price Guide indicates a price of $18,000 for a #1 condition vehicle, which this is not. You are getting an excellent truck and a very fair price. I understand that buying on the internet has some unique uncertainties. The truck is not perfect...if it was, it would be priced 50% higher. But when we look that this truck, it strikes us as an incredible find...that is why we bought it in the first place. |

As I said before, it's a beautiful truck (and I like the color...). You are the one who will have to be satisfied with it at the end of the day.
I know people who thought I was nutz to buy the trucks I have for what I paid for them (but, then again, they have brand new cars that aren't paid for, so I don't respect their opinions... I have this thing about debt, don't like it... ) but I love my trucks. As nice as that truck is I wouldn't want to drive it often. If you plan to drive it often I think you could find a less original truck that looks as good for less money. But if you are looking for something to store and keep (which is fine, but I drive mine...) Then this truck may be for you. I feel like you would have to see it in person to make a final decision. I do think it has been repainted, but so have most of these old trucks, so that doesn't bother me, as long as the repaint isn't hiding something. It's hard to find original condition trucks, they were built to work and most of them show it. Good luck, Rg

VIN Tag has the wrong rivets! I wouldn't touch that truck with a ten-foot pole. Not unless I had the opportunity to check and verify everything. I'm betting 125K on that one.
Good Luck! TP |

Well I can't say the rivets are correct or not, but after examining the plate
I'm convinced it looks like the plates have scratches around the rivets indicating the rivets had been drilled out. It just looks fishy to me

Hard to tell from the photo if those are scratches or just polish/wax which was not completely removed.
