Breather line

I just found out yesterday will trying to finish my lift, that both axels breather line is cloged with dirt. Im sure that this has been like this for a real long time, but its got me worried. Is there any thing bad thats going to happened because it wont breath? Whats the point of the breather line, why isnt the axel just sealed? I plan to clean the fitting on the axel and put new breather lines on, but what sucks is having to take apart the axel to get the dirt out once I clear the fitting.

All u need to do is remove the rear cover and add new gear lub once u have cleaned it all out. I doubt that much dirt actually got into the pumpkin. The pumpkins are vented to release pressure that builds up in there.

Did you have a breather vent on the end of it or was it just an open hose?

I've used the coiled air compressor line in place of this line. It serves three purposes... When installing a lift, it extendends the existing breather lines. If you intend for your suspension to do extensive flexing, then it provides for unlimited needed length. Finally it looks pretty damb trick, and keeps unknowing people asking about it's purpose.

The heat induced pressure buildup in the axle, if not continually vented, could blow out the axle seals which would likely leak oil on the brakes.

Useing the coiled air compresor line is a real cool idea, I have seen it on a lifted truck before and its sweet. I think Im going to try and find some and use that.

Where did you get yours? I looked at Home Depot, Westlake Hardware, Wally World, Big lots, Auto Zone, and they only had 1/4" , I need 3/8" and the only place I was able to find with it was Steves Whole Sale and it was 30$

I heated the end of the tubing up to make it soft and plyable enough to fit. Be gentle though. No need for a torch or anything like that. I suggest using a cig. lighter or heat gun. It took me a couple of tries but it worked perfectly once I got the right amount of heat. I got the line from harbour freight, but any tool company should have this stuff.
