Came across a 1985 pickup today, with 4x4....2.5 ton axles and 4 wheel steering, can anyone tell me what these axles might be from.....and if there is anything in particular I should look for/at when I go to look at the truck?

probably from a military duece and a half, which were made by various makers over the many years, they are all basically the same.. obviously they are both front axles..this truck wasnt meant to be driven on the road, but you may check the rear steer as it may have been "southern engineered". Also check the seals on the axles.. as well as the CV boots... you might also try www.steelsoldiers.com as they have a duece forum.. and very knowledgeable people... also post pics if you get a chance.. i have seen some of an 85 or so with duece axles..

make sure that rear steer has a positive lockout on it, where there's NO chance of it malfunctioning and steering when you dont want it to, especially if you're planning on driving it on the street. if it wasnt already converted to brakes at each wheel, rather than just driveline brakes, that mod will be very costly. it may also be required in your state.

sorry, new to the 4x4 world, what makes a all wheel brake vs. axle brake???
What should i be looking for i guess?

All wheel brakes are basically what every car or truck on the street have. Just make sure there is a drum or rotor at every wheel.

oh, the rotor attached at the center of the axle by the diff. housing......is this an axle brake, I have seen these, just never picked up on the name.

yeah the "axle" brake doesnt have nearly the stopping power or all wheel brakes.. however they do make good parking brakes..

how much lift? what kind of suspension? and what sized tires?

tires are 48" tires. The lift I would make a guess to be at least 16", it appears to have a 4 link setup for the front and rear axles. Other than that all I know is that its a TH400 with a 454 big block running what I assume is a np205 transfer case.
