Need help-key switch

I just bought a 76 4x4 for $275. The reason it was so cheap was because the guy had lost the key . My question is, can I remove the key switch without having it in the run position? Any other ideas?

Locksmith? Have him/her pick the lock so you can get it into the run position.

No problem. You need to pull the steering wheel and pull the turn signal switch loose to get to a slot in the column bowl. You can release the lock cylinder by inserting shim stock in the slot.

A shop manual or decent aftermarket repair manual will have detailed pictures and instructions. You don't need the key for any of this.
